What you'll do
Learn to throw on a pottery wheel and have a great day playing with clay at this pottery class in Keswick.
Join The Makers Mill's resident potter, Michelle to learn to make your own pots. This pottery class is an ideal opportunity for anyone keen to have a go at throwing on the pottery wheel. You'll learn all the basics of pottery throwing, including preparing your clay and how to throw on the wheel.
You'll create two final pieces which will be fired and glazed by your teacher. You'll be able to collect your pottery at a later date.
With three pottery wheels and a maximum of six people in each class, you'll have plenty of time to practice your throwing. When you're not working on the pottery wheel, you'll practice wedging clay and hand-building.
Your pottery class is structured to help you get the best from your pottery making experience. Here's what your day will look like:
10am - coffee, tea and introductions.
10.15am - clay preparation.
10.30am - demonstration on the basics of wheel throwing.
10.45am - your chance to throw on the wheel!
12.30pm - lunch.
1.15pm - your chance to continue throwing with tea, coffee and cake mid-afternoon.
3.30pm - clean up time.
4pm - finish.
Times may vary depending on how you get on. You'll be supported throughout every step of your pottery making by your experienced tutors and you'll soon ease into your craft!
By the end of your pottery class, you'll have learnt how to throw on a pottery wheel! You'll have gained a wealth of new knowledge at this workshop and you'll have created two items of your own. After your pottery class, your teacher will fire your items and will let you know when your creations are ready to collect.
Please note: an additional materials cost of £25 is payable on the day to your tutor in cash.

The Makers Mill is a creative venue in the heart of the lake district in a converted 19th-century mill converted by owners Luke and Sophie Harding.
Alongside our art and design gallery and four permanent makers studios, we have two spaces to run arts and crafts workshops.
