Hello & Welcome to my Pottery Taster Session listing.

Please read carefully what your session will involve.

I have tried to put as much detail as I can so you can easily decide if it’s for you or not.

Sorry but I don’t offer specific celebration Pottery Sessions for example Birthdays or Christmas.

I simply offer a Pottery Session.

The idea behind the Taster Session is to give you time to have a go on the Potters Wheel and try some Hand Building Techniques, so your time will be 1 hour for each activity.

We only have 2 Pottery Wheels so in a class of four, two persons take a turn at the wheel in each hour. If you want to spend the 2 hours solely on the Pottery Wheel please message me before booking the class as we may need to arrange an alternative date

Don't worry if this is your first time working with clay, as the class is designed with beginners in mind. Everything you need will be provided for you, and I will be on hand to give you tips and advice to help you get the most out of the session.

You'll leave the class with a sense of accomplishment and filled with new pottery skills that you can use for more projects in the future.

I started my clay journey with pottery painting, the closure of the shop led me to buying the equipment to carry in at home, I then progressed to weekly college classes and fell in love with the potters wheel. I wanted to know how to fire my kiln properly and how to make glazes, this then led me to uni as a mature student completing a ceramic design degree. I feel pottery has more errors than success and is a forever learning process. I love the variety of clay and the therapeutic value I get from it, as someone who loves to learn I have found something that continues to amaze me and I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have gained over the years

I really enjoyed my taster session with Joan. I was fortunate to have a one to one session. Joan was well prepared. She explained and demonstrated what we would be going in the session, and encouraged me to take my time as there was no need to stick rigidly to the timescale. I had the opportunity to experiment a bit, to see what I wanted to do. The demonstration was very helpful and easy to follow. Joan was there to offer advice, but only if needed. I had the chance to have a go on the potters wheel which was fun. Joan showed me how to use it and came to the rescue when l lost control of the pot. I completed two pots and will be returning to paint and decorate them. The whole experience was relaxed and enjoyable. I would recommend this taster session to my friends.

Booked for my 12 & 10 year old children along with my brother for a birthday present. Joan was really great, taught them how to use the wheel and slab build, they all enjoyed it, they each made a pot on the wheel and some tea light holders as well. Great afternoon

Teacher's response

Thanks for your review its really appreciated.

The teacher was excellent. She was very informative and helpful. Her instruction was very clear and easy to follow for a first timer. We got to use the clay wheel and also worked with a firmer clay on the table. I made a pot on the clay wheel and with the firmer clay I made 2 small vases/ tea light holders, with the extra clay I made some Christmas decorations and 2 very small plates that I will use to put my jewellery on. The venue was at the teachers house. The studio is an excellent set up. It is extention of her house. I was in a group of 4 during the session which was a good number for the venue size. It was an enjoyable experience that I would highly recommend.

Teacher's response

Thanks Sian for a very detailed review and I am so glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to you returning soon to decorate/glaze your pottery.

On arrival there was a conservatory door to enter through. Our teacher Joan greeted us. She was very friendly and chatty. We felt very welcome. The room had everything we could possibly need. Joan talked us through what everything was and demonstrated techniques for throwing, coning, opening the clay and moulding. She also showed us techniques for making pots by hand. It was all great fun and so therapeutic. We could have stayed all day.

It was a lovely, cosy, but well equipped space. Our host was a great mix of knowledgeable and relaxed, and gave us lots of options about how we’d like to use the session we had booked. We came out having experienced a lovely introduction to wheel throwing - which is what we were interested in having a go at. We felt that we were guided enough to have a constructive go, but not overly pressured to ‘get it right’, which was the perfect balance for us. Would highly recommend for a beginner taster session.

A very relaxed environment for two novice potters! I had limited knowledge and my mum was a complete novice, and this was a fabulous introduction to Pottery! Our tutor was friendly, supportive and had a good depth of knowledge. We used the wheel to throw a pot and then a go at slab building. A great idea for someone wanting an introduction to pottery or for a fun small group activity.

My wife and I fancied having a go at pottery having seen it on TV. Joan’s garage had been converted into a small pottery studio with pottery wheels, tables chairs and an array of hand tools. Joan was very engaging and helpful explaining what we would be doing during the 2 hour pottery taster session. She demonstrated a technique and then let us have a go giving helpful advice as we progressed. We eventually made a pinch-pot and set it to one side. My wife then made a tea-light holder using a slab technique and I ‘threw’ a pot on the wheel.
Joan was not in a hurry to finish the session but we had to leave due to grandparent in duties.
We both enjoyed the taster session and asked what Joan could provide for future sessions.

I bought this experience for my husband and 11year old daughter. Joan was really welcoming and helpful in every way. She demonstrated and explained different techniques and had so much patience when they had a go at throwing clay on the wheel. The studio is an amazing space and her husband even offered us a hot drink. Highly recommend this experience, thanks Joan! We’re off home now to watch the great pottery throw down

I absolutely loved my session with Joan today! Really enjoyed having a go at throwing pots, feeling the clay and seeing when it worked and when it didn't. Joan was a really encouraging and patient teacher. Also got to make tea light from a slab of clay, so learnt many new skills. Will recommend to all my friends and look forward to collecting my pieces soon.
