Discover how to hand-build with clay in this engaging workshop. Over three hours, I’ll guide you through the enjoyable process of creating a unique vessel from clay. This workshop is not geared towards making a specific object (unlike my other workshops); participants can choose what they want to make.
In this hands-on activity, I will demonstrate essential techniques and provide support as you learn:
Getting comfortable with clay properties and preparation
Using pinching and coiling techniques to build your form
Methods for securely joining clay sections and achieving a smooth surface
Tips for shaping and refining your unique design
This workshop is perfectly suited for individuals new to ceramics who want to learn the basics. However, those with previous clay experience looking to practise their hand-building skills are also very welcome.
All clay, tools, and necessary equipment for the activity are provided. We will start with a practice ball of clay to get a feel for the material before beginning our objects.
After the workshop, I will handle the finishing touches for you – applying my neutral glaze and firing your creation. Two pieces per person will be fired. Any extra pieces can be fired at an additional cost of £5 per piece.
What you'll get
A completed ceramic artwork.

Hi! I'm Emma and I'm the potter behind Studio Yōki, ceramic studio based in Glasgow. Specialising in small batch planters and vases, alongside a selection of homewares, I use traditional hand building techniques such as pinching and coiling to create characterful pieces of pottery.
I have a passion for teaching others my skills and run a selection of fun and therapeutic hand building workshops. So if you enjoy getting your hands dirty, making a flower vase or floral bowl, come and join me in one of my hand building workshops. (You might even win potter of the workshop!)
