Wheel Throwing Pottery Class

Learn how to make ceramic creations on a pottery wheel in Hertfordshire!

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 12 guests       £85

Learn the art of wheel throwing at this fun pottery making class in Hitchin. If you're looking for some creative things to do in Hertfordshire, a half an hour drive from North London, this pottery workshop is ideal! Taught in a peaceful garden studio, you'll be able to unwind and relax as you discover the fun and addictive craft of wheel throwing pottery.
Our studio has 6 wheels and you therefore may be joined by others on the remaining wheels as most of our classes are small group classes. If you have a group of 6 or more people you will reserve all of the wheels for the session. Should you want a private class for a smaller group this can be arranged for a higher rate, please let us know.
Wheel throwing is wet, messy and creative fun for all! Don't worry if you're new to pottery making, this beginner-friendly class is led by a talented ceramicist who will take you through their top techniques and tips step by step.
In this pottery making class, you will get hands-on with your own clay creations so that you can get to grips with this captivating art form. You will have the option to use white clay and then paint what you make using a huge selection of beautiful glazes. After your craft class, your pottery creations will be glazed in a clear gloss and fired ready to be collected at a later date from the studio or posted for an extra postage fee.
Alternatively, you can choose to use clay which will not need to be fired and can then be taken away with you on the day. Air drying clay dries hard, can be later painted using acrylic paint and will be decorative only whereas with fired clay the pots will become pottery following firing and can be used functionally.
This fun pottery workshop is a great way to relax, learn something new and gain pottery-making skills in a fun and welcoming environment.
At the end of this pottery for beginners class, you'll have a beautiful handmade item to keep as well as some newfound wheel throwing skills — plus a potential new love for this exhilarating craft!
What you'll get
  • An air-dry clay creation to take away on the day of your class, or
  • A white clay creation which will be fired and glazed for you after your class. You can then collect your item or have it posted to you.
  • An apron to wear on the day!

  • 5/5 from Georgie Hollingsworth, attended Sep 2026: I was given this as a birthday gift. The venue was lovely. In the back garden of a family home. Mother and daughter running classes. 6 wheels available for the throwing, close together but enough space each. Good tutorial and help when needed. Just enough time in the class to settle in, watch the tutorials and explanations, then to throw our own pot, dry and glaze it. Really enjoyed it! Can't wait to pick up the fired item. • 5/5 from Jack Grange, attended Jul 2026: We attended a small 6 person class which was great! Instructions were very clear and our teacher was very kind and helpful with ensuring we were happy with what we made! Would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Dylan Coetzee, attended Apr 2026: We had a great time. Carole is so knowledgeable and made the process so fun and interesting. A great birthday gift!
  • 5/5 from Jamie Hunt, attended Feb 2026: Really nice, gentle beginner session with friendly and knowledgeable hosts. We each made one pot from a ball of clay on the wheel, from learning how to centre the clay and cone up, through to shaping the pot, with lots of step-by-step advice and hands-on help; nobody was left behind. We were then introduced to a couple of different kinds of underglaze in a variety of colours and given time to decorate. There is a month's wait for them to be fully dried, glazed and fired and then we can go to pick them up, so I can't comment on how ours will come out, but there were some wonderful examples around the workshop. These pots will not be fired hot enough to ensure that they are watertight, but they are food safe, so you could expect to make a small pot or bowl for snacks or trinkets in this session. Great fun with nice people and an ideal introduction to the craft.
  • 5/5 from Charlie Osbourn, attended Feb 2026: Very informative and fun. The small class size was ideal for us as we got the attention we needed from the instructor!
  • 5/5 from Jacqueline Woolnough, attended Oct 2025: We had a wonderful time at our pottery throwing class. Carol is a fabulous tutor, very friendly, helpful and patient. There was 6 people in the class and we all got on very well together, and we all achieved decent looking pots. Thoroughly recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Brenda Dalton, attended Jul 2025: Very enjoyable experience and good fun.
  • 4/5 from Melanie Hingorani, attended Jun 2025: Really enjoyed this, clear instructions, everyone came away with a decent pot at the end. Easy to book. My only significant feedback is that it felt a bit cramped having 6 wheels in that back room, felt like I was going to trip over something or someone. Maybe slightly shorter introduction chat and moving on more rapidly to the teaching might reduce pressure on time. Definitely very good though and would go again.
  • 5/5 from Adam Sweetman, attended Apr 2025: I bought this class as a birthday gift for my wife to be. We did the class together and had a really great time! Carol, our host, was warm, friendly and engaging, and helped us make some great pottery! We definitely learned some great tips!
  • 5/5 from Tanya Francis, attended Feb 2025: Great fun!
  • 5/5 from Lana Ginns, attended Oct 2024: Fantastic wheel throwing session with Carole today. I had booked a private session following Carole's advice as my pottery-obsessed daughter is still quite young (under 7) and it really was the right decision. Carole tailored the session to our pace and was super patient and helpful. We came away with two lovely bowls and can't wait to see what they will look like after firing. I'm sure we will be back soon!
  • 5/5 from Tim & Hannah Meakins, attended Aug 2024: Had an absolutely wonderful time. Keeping the class nice and small makes it easier for a much more relaxed and personal experience. Highly recommended. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Abz Savundrarajan, attended Aug 2023: Sarah was very welcoming and very patient with us. Very helpful and walked us through the whole session. I have a whole new respect for pottery. Would definitely recommend and come again
  • 5/5 from Ian Tyler, attended Aug 2023: Spent a great morning with Carole and her daughter - they were very patient and explained everything thoroughly
  • 5/5 from Karen Morton, attended May 2023: This was the first time we had had a go at this and even though it was more difficult that we thought, we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience/challenge. We had 2 teachers between 5 of us to help guide us through and correct anything we did slightly wrong and they were patient and helpful. The studio was warm and we had enough room to be able to try to create our masterpieces. Would highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Alexandra Pintican, attended Apr 2023: This was just the best thing to do. The ladies were so helpful and patient. It was so much fun. I would highly recommend this for anyone
  • 5/5 from Chris Davies, attended Mar 2023: Really fun class; teacher was very friendly and helpful. Very happy with my first pot.
  • 5/5 from Paul Adler, attended Feb 2023: It is more than 40 years since either of us handled clay. Our instructor, Sarah Core was superb. A perfect pace, really supportive and really personable. The facilities were good and we had a really relaxed morning. We are looking forward to seeing the end product. Thank you so much.
  • 5/5 from Alba Gonzalez, attended Feb 2023: Carole was an awesome teacher, very welcoming and friendly. We had a great time learning how to use the throwing wheel and decorating our creations! Definitely recommend!
  • 5/5 from Laurence Lemee, attended Feb 2023: We had such a lovely afternoon. Carole is an excellent teacher. The materials were all provided. It was not easy but we all end up with nice pots. I will hardly recommend it for a great family afternoon.

  • 5/5 from Dimitra Tsompani, attended Oct 2022: Great experience, we had such a nice time! Perfect birthday gift! Our teacher, Sarah, was amazing, very pleasant and helpfull! Wod definitely reccomend, can't wait to collect our pots!
  • 5/5 from Petra Trimble, attended Jul 2022: From the start, Carole was friendly and welcoming. Her studio was clean and tidy but very well stocked. Her demonstration was thorough and her teaching style good to follow. I found her encouraging and promoted success. I really enjoyed my first experience of the wheel throwing class and can’t wait to see the final results once my pots have been in the kiln. I would highly recommend. Thank you PT.
  • 5/5 from Helen Moore, attended Jul 2022: We were four novices and Carole was so patient with us. The experience of using the wheel was fantastic - I would highly recommend.
  • 4/5 from Warrick Lee, attended Apr 2022: We had a great time. The teacher was knowledgeable and patient. The venue was nice and tidy with inspiring creations everywhere. Looking forward to collecting what we made soon. Would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Steve Kenneford, attended Mar 2022: Very enjoyable and professionally (and patiently) tutored. Would certainly recommend as a great way to spend a few hours.
  • 5/5 from Rosemary Ruston, attended Feb 2022: We all enjoyed the experience of feeling a wheel beneath our hands, and with the clay it was a very new sort of experience. We look forward to seeing our painted and baked creations in about three weeks time. Carole looked after us very well and not only showed us what we had to do but also rebuilt our pyramids when they collapsed. She kept her hands remarkably clear of clay – it would take us quite a while to reach such skill.
  • 5/5 from Kate Burton, attended Dec 2021: It was nice to try something new. Great fun! Nice relaxed environment. Looking forward to see our finished pots.
  • 5/5 from Susie Wylie, attended Dec 2021: Me, my sister and mum went to do this and we had a great time. We are all beginners and Carole had a wonderful way of teaching us through the different stages of creating our pots. By the end all three of us had a pot, all of which all looked slightly different. It was wonderful.
  • 5/5 from Naveenan Edward, attended Jun 2021: Carole was a very patient and passionate coach and we thoroughly enjoyed our class with her. It was amazing to be able to learn from scratch and have our own work at the end to show for it. There was such a wide variety of paints to decorate with so that everyone can create their own unique pot. Would recommend anyone to try this thoroughly enjoyable course!
