This 4-week pottery course in Edinburgh is designed for complete beginners who want to properly learn wheel throwing, not just try it once. With one-to-one tuition and your tutor's full attention each week, you'll build real confidence on the wheel and develop the core skills needed to create your own ceramic pieces from scratch.
Structured to take you from absolute basics to a finished, glazed piece, this beginners' pottery course guides you through every stage of the process. Centring, throwing, trimming, and glazing, at a pace that actually lets the skills sink in.
What to expect:
Week 1:
  • Centering, how to wedge and prepare clay.
  • Learn wheel speed and safety.
  • Throw clay using the cone method and open a base.
Week 2:
  • Pulling walls, keeping an even wall thickness.
  • Collar into main height.
  • Wire cut and remove from the bat, and throw a standing cylinder.
Week 3:
  • Shaping and making bowls.
  • Shape outward curves without losing control, add belly and shoulder profiles to cylinder.
  • Trim a leather-hard pot, foot ring basics and choose best piece for glazing.
Week 4:
  • Glaze and fire!
  • Free throwing -- get creative.
  • Glaze your piece and load the kiln, ready for collection in 3-4 weeks.
By the end of the course, you'll have developed a solid foundation in wheel throwing, created your own glazed ceramic pieces, and gained the confidence to continue your pottery journey. Your finished work will be ready to collect approximately 3–4 weeks after firing.
What you'll get
2-3 completed high fired pieces.

Hi, I'm Charlotte, clay-obsessed, self-taught, and six years deep into a love affair with ceramics! I fell into ceramics during the pandemic and never looked back (my hands have never been the same, in the best way).
There's nothing quite like the moment a wobbly lump of clay turns into something real on a pottery wheel. It's messy, meditative, and ridiculously fun, which is exactly why my wheel throwing classes make such a brilliant date night idea in Edinburgh. Trade the usual dinner-and-a-movie for clay under your nails, a few giggles, and a one-of-a-kind creation to take home (bonus points if it's a little wonky).
I taught pottery classes in Porto before swapping it for Edinburgh, where I've just opened my new ceramics studio. Whether you're booking a romantic date night, a fun activity with friends, or a solo creative escape, I'll guide you through beginner-friendly wheel throwing in a relaxed, no-pressure space.
