Kintsugi Pottery Class for Beginners

Learn the art of kintsugi at this London craft class.

2 hours Class size 1 to 15 (public classes), 8 to 40 label £52

Discover the Japanese art of kintsugi at this London pottery class and create a beautiful ceramic piece to take home.

Kintsugi is an ancient art form that celebrates the Japanese philosophy of the beauty of imperfection. It involves putting broken pieces of pottery back together with gold, embracing the cracks to produce a beautiful piece of art.

In this workshop, your experienced tutor will tell you all about the history and philosophy of kintsugi whilst taking you through the process of making your own kintsugi piece.

Kintsugi is a perfect solution for a mistakenly broken treasured item, but to practice this art form you'll learn how to safely break pottery to practice mending it in the kintsugi way, without overdoing the cracks. You'll use a hammer and drill with plenty of support from your teacher.

The gold of kintsugi is what makes it so beautiful and in the next stage of your craft class, you'll learn to use a micro metal mix with epoxy resin to create your gold solution. You'll then use this solution to fix together your broken pottery pieces, creating a wonderful piece of perfectly imperfect art.

You'll finish this London kintsugi class with lots of new knowledge on kintsugi pottery and the ability to mend broken ceramic pieces. You'll also take away your own handmade piece of kintsugi art. Kintsugi is a therapeutic process and you'll feel a sense of calm and accomplishment as you finish this special workshop.

Your finished piece is only for display not for food use, microwaves, ovens or the dishwasher.

This was such a wonderful class. The teacher was so calm, kind and knowledgable and went out of their way to make sure each person attending was included and supported. It was a really calm mindful activity, but was also fun and lighthearted environment. I came home with a beautiful bowl and I would really like to go back for another class again with Brandon. There were two of us who went together but this would be equally as good as a solo activity or group.

This was a fantastic workshop that was well worth the small amount you pay for. The venue and all the materials were on point. The teacher was amazing, knowledgeable and incredibly witty and fun. She went through the stages of the workshop in small parts so everyone understood and no one got left behind. She really did make the experience fun and we left with a beautiful piece of pottery. The workshop was a gift for a friends 50th and she absolutely loved it so I’d highly recommend it to everyone. We had no experience of this workshop so it’s for beginners and I’d like the believe that we left as pros! Kira the teacher was brilliant.

I had a really great time at this class! The teacher, Brandon, was very skilled and really nice. Each class includes a pot, which you get to break and kintsugi back together. I also brought a dish that I had made but had been broken and he was kind enough to let me kintsugi that. I found the process really fun and therapeutic! I wish I'd known about this studio sooner as it looks like a brilliant space to do pottery, too.

This was AMAZING experience - leant some good 金缮 Kintsugi techniques and “Zen” time~ I loved it!

Anuli Changa Nov 2023

An underwhelming experience would have been more fun to DIY:
- We were met with confusion when we entered and someone gestured vaguely and we had to wonder around the warehouse space till we found the right table.
- we started late as we were waiting on late people
- Brandon gave more time to some people than others, when my bowl didn't fit back together properly I was told there was nothing I could do and for another person he took the time to file down the bowl to ensure it fit better, disappointing to have such different experience
- near the end Brandon started to rush us to finish
- he also mentioned during the class how boring he found Kintsugi, a rather tone deaf comment.

Georgiana Davies Nov 2023

a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, this was most enjoyable and relaxing!

Initially I thought it was very slow, we started way after it was supposed to which was annoying. But, I did really enjoy the course once it got going! There was something very calming and lovely about the process. Our teacher Kira was really great, she guided us in a very nice way and was just lovely while sharing some facts about the history of Kintsugi. Brendon was a excellent teacher, i love how he educated us on the history of kintsugi whilst taking us step by step through the process of putting our bowls together. I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop! I will definitely be doing this again with you guys

Brandon was patient, thorough with his demonstrations and clear with his intructuons, very knowledgeable, and made the class fun. Be prepared to leave class a little bit glittery.
Was an incredible experience and I will be recommending it without a doubt!

Absolutely loved the class.
Although venue changed unexpectedly, the new spot was in easy walking distance from the train station. Venue was a pottery studio, so was spacious & probably a great teaser for anyone wanting to start pottery-wheel lessons!
We had a wide wonderful selection of pottery items to choose fromselecting my final choice was tough, but that is a good thing!
Brandon is a great teacher. He is infinitely patient and kind and teaches at just the right pace. I would recommend this is anyone who is interested in Kintsugi.
Just a pity, that the kintsugi kits for doing it yourself at home, were out of stock.

What an amazing experience. The teacher was very caring and personal. It was great to learn about the history of kinsugi and create my own ceramic. Thank you for this wonderful experience

A really well organised event. Really enjoyed Kira’s energy. A nice sized group as well, everyone was really friendly. So glad we did this, a really different type of activity to gather with friends or even as a date night idea. I booked this even for my sister’s birthday and she absolutely loved it. Timing didn’t feel rushed at all and everything was explained really clearly for beginners. Had such a fun time and we all loved our perfectly imperfect creations. Thanks Kira

We had such a good time. We both were a little nervous as this is out of our comfort zone, but Brandon was very helpful and made the whole process easy to follow. It was really interesting learning about the history of Kintsugi and how it links to the mental health aspect is cool. It was a very calm environment with a friendly group of people. We are both happy with our bowls, and would recommend to anyone even if you have no experience of this kind of thing.
Thanks again!

Brandon was a great teacher, clearly explaining what we needed to do and how to do it. I think we all came away happy we everything we broke then repaired! A really enjoyable class.

Carmelina Critcher Sep 2023

Great hands-on workshop by Brandon. Lots of bowls/plates to choose from. We were definitely spoilt for choice! It was fun learning to break the items before putting them back together the Kintsugi way. I liked that the repairs were done in stages, with everyone doing the same steps altogether so that Brandon could control the timings. I was quite proud of my plate and it now sits on the mantlepiece for everyone to admire!

The class is well-paced and Brandon is very friendly. Coming home with a beautiful piece of kintsugi is very satisfying. The craft itself requires some technique but is the right amount of challenge for me.

Fantastic class, would give 6 stars if I could. Brandon is not only a knowledgeable and clear teacher, he's also a really nice guy! Made the class fun even when just chatting.

The class itself was easy enough for complete beginners and really enjoyable. The quality of the ceramics provided was obvious too and and a mark of quality. There was no cut-off at the end and Brandon was happy to help those still struggling to finish their pieces.

I highly recommend the class to anyone.

Anton Sep 2023

This was a fantastic experience. Fun, educational, relaxing, and very different.

The two hour session absolutely flew by, which is a testament to how much we enjoyed ourselves!

Our teacher / guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable, friendly, patient and funny. He gave clear directions, and supported everyone in the class to have the best experience and go home with marvellous pieces of unique art. The venue was perfect - a real ceramics working space, which I look forward to going back to.

Also excellent value for money, given the quality of the bowl we were able to choose (to take home) the materials, and amount of 1-2-1 support. The class size was spot on.

I’ll definitely be recommending this class to friends, and have already looked at buying a home kit from Brandon when they’re next available, as the way it slowed my mind down is something I need more of in my life!

Thanks to Brandon and Jackie Chi (woof!)

Such a fun and interesting afternoon - I can't recommend it highly enough! Brandon was so patient and unflappable, explaining clearly what to do, when, and how (lots of respect for time and gravity!). He is very experienced and it was great to learn a bit about the history and philosophy of kintsugi as well as making a piece ourselves which we could then take home. Brandon's enthusiasm and energy was infectious, and he was able to give each of us in the group individual attention as well as building and maintaining a fun team dynamic. This was a good experience! I appreciated Brandon sharing the principles of Kintsugi throughout the session. Despite it being a large class, I felt that I had sufficient individual attention from Brandon. The venue is bright and airy (though the background music at some points of the class made it a bit hard to hear instructions). I would recommend this class for a beginner.
