Explore free machine embroidery and learn to create beautiful designs with the help of textile artist Sarah Ames at this workshop near Penrith, on the northern fringes of the Lake District!

Free machine embroidery is among the favourite techniques in the crafting world! It's easy, quick, effective and produces a great range of results. In this class, you'll master all the basic skills you need to use freehand machining on a variety of DIY projects.

Sarah will come with a host of ideas for you as well as templates you can use if you need a little inspiration for your design. You can also bring along reference materials to trace or influence your final piece, like books, magazines and special pictures!

Whether you're searching for crafty team building activities in Penrith or you want to level up your embroidery skills, you'll end this class with a beautiful piece of textile art to take home.

Please note: there will be a materials charge payable directly to the tutor on the day in cash of approx £5-10depending on the materials used.


Knowledge required
Some experience of using a sewing machine.
 
What you'll get
  • A List of the materials and equipment needed for the class.
  • Lunch will be provided.
What to bring
  • Please bring your own working sewing machine with feed dogs that can be dropped. You will also need an embroidery / darning foot.
  • Please ensure your machine is in good working order and that you are familiar with how to thread the machine and refill the bobbin, as well as having the instruction booklet.
  • We may have a couple of suitable spare machines available, though not the embroidery feet – please ask to borrow one when you book.
  • Also, bring a selection of threads and fabric scraps, sketch paper and pencils for planning, pictures and photos for inspiration/reference or a starting point.

Sarah Ames


Sarah is a Textile Artist working just outside the Lake District National Park in West Cumbria - her surrounding landscapes inspire much of her work. She sews from a lovely studio (a renovated summer house) in the garden, using appliqué and free machine embroidery to create a range of contemporary, functional and decorative textile pieces.

She has a BA and MA in Contemporary Applied Arts from her studies at the University of Cumbria and is also a qualified teacher.
