6 hours Class size 1 to 6 guests       £115 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Join us for this relaxed upholstery workshop in Lewes where you can work on your own project while learning valuable upholstery techniques in a friendly, supportive setting. Bring along a small item such as a drop-in seat or footstool, along with your chosen upholstery-weight fabric and trim, and enjoy an enjoyable session of hands-on making.
This informal class is limited to six participants, ensuring everyone receives personal guidance while also benefiting from the shared experience of the group. Whether you’re curious about upholstery or keen to finally tackle a project you’ve been thinking about, this session offers the perfect introduction!
What to expect:
  • Guidance on modern and traditional upholstery techniques.
  • The opportunity to work on your own project at your own pace.
  • Advice on measuring and selecting suitable upholstery fabrics.
  • Tips on working with sustainable and natural upholstery materials where possible.
  • A collaborative, relaxed environment where everyone can learn from each other’s projects.
All basic tools and sundries such as tacks, staples, glue, twine, calico, hessian, and polywadding will be provided for use during the session. If your piece requires specialist materials such as springs, buttons, or full stuffing, these can be supplied for an additional cost.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have made real progress on your upholstery project and gained practical skills and knowledge to continue working on pieces at home. Tea, coffee, and biscuits are included to keep the creativity flowing!
Please note:
  • Please send a photo of your project so we can confirm whether it is suitable prior to the day.
  • Please avoid velvet and leather, as they are too tricky for a 1-day session.
  • Depending on the project, you may need to strip your chair down before the workshop.
  • Everyone will have their own set of tools for use on the day.

I am a designer maker living and working in East Sussex.
I produce modern upholstered footstools. Useful objects, made well.
My practice is informed by the idea that “If you can’t fix it, you don’t own it”.
Alongside regular upholstery jobs (recovers, repairs, reupholstery), I run Rounded by. making & selling upholstered birchwood modern footstools; using 100% natural & recycled materials, these pieces are made for life, not landfill.
With none of the corners that so frustrate upholstery newcomers, I thought the Footstools made the perfect 1 day workshop experience and now run these monthly at The Paddock Studios, Lewes and as a guest tutor further afield. Folk come, learn, laugh, make & leave with their very own footstool.
I trained as a Prop Maker at Central School of Speech & Drama, and on graduation worked in Theatres & Festivals including The Young Vic, Stephen Joseph Theatre & Edinburgh Fringe. I fell into marketing films, working at Universal and then Paramount Pictures for years, before realising how much I missed making, so began training in traditional upholstery at the Thomas Calton Centre, and then in more depth at The Good Life Centre, both in London.
Three things I know : Never underestimate the power of a biscuit. Measure twice, cut once. It's risky wearing flip flops in the workshop.
