Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Jackie Elderfield, attended Nov 2025: I would definitely recommend this class making a granny crotchet square. My teacher was informative, patient and clearly enjoyed teaching. The time went very quick.
  • 5/5 from Louise Diment, attended Oct 2025: Alice was incredibly patient with me when I was struggling at first and got frustrated - by the end of the class, while I hadn't compeleted a whole granny square, I had managed to get the hang of the technique (which I didn't think I would be able to at first). I then finished the granny square the next day at home, with the help of the printed instructions we got to take home. Really appreciated how small the class size was so I could easily ask questions & get help when I made mistakes.

  • 5/5 from Carolyn Irish, attended Aug 2024: I learnt to do the basic stitches of a Granny Square. Teacher was excellent and had the patience of a saint with me as I was trying to do it left handed and she was right handed. I feel confident now to have a go on my own and see what I can produce with what I have learnt. I thought the course was great value with the equipment provided.
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Aug 2024: I enjoyed the class. The teacher was excellent, very patient with me! I hadn't realised it would be a 1 to 1 class and was a bit disappointed not to meet fellow crocheters. However, it was great to have a dedicated teacher who took alot of care to check my work as well as showing me very good technique. I learnt alot and thought the class was good value for money. The materials and kit given were also very nice. Thank you.
  • 5/5 from Christine, attended Jul 2024: I booked this class when there was a discount on all workshops. I thought it would be fun to reconnect with the time when granny squares were everywhere. Denise, the class tutor in Bournemouth, was fantastic. Her clear instructions were supported by a handout. She attended to each of us to ensure we understood and to spot any mishaps. We all had some experience of crochet. Denise was very encouraging and all of us left after 90 minutes with a big smile and with the materials provided, a bag, yarns and crochet.

I would prefer not to have the class on the shop floor, as customers keep stopping, looking over your shoulders and watching which is very off putting it is very good value for money with all the materials provided to get you started. I have now done both beginners classes and hoping to put everything in Denise Has taught me into practice.
