Weekly Evening Upholstery Workshop

Join us for a weekly upholstery workshop in Lewes.

5 x 3 hours

Class size 1 to 3 (public classes), 2 to 4
£275 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Our small group evening upholstery session in Lewes is booked as a run of consecutive 5-week sessions, with a maximum of 4 students. You will be one of four students and will be able to work on and leave your project on site, returning weekly to work on your piece with tuition.
We can work on traditional or modern pieces. It is suitable for beginners and returners. This is a great opportunity to work on your own piece while learning from the differing projects across the group, whilst still receiving significant personal tuition.
You can book to start on Monday or Thursday and attend consecutively, but we understand that sometimes things can come up -- we will be able to accommodate requests for alternative dates. Please indicate your preferred session and start date when booking/enquiring.
We offer a space for learning, using your hands, leisure, pleasure, fun, challenge, repair and reuse, revaluing and reimagining.
What you'll get
  • Space and time to work on your own projects, with tuition and guidance!
  • Tools are provided, and sundries can be purchased at a cost.
Knowledge required
This is a friendly leisure session, where we work towards your goals, pace, and learning style, suitable for total beginners and returners alike.
What to bring
  • Your project, top fabric and trim -- and definitely wear hard soled, covered shoes.
  • An apron (if you have one).
  • Clothes you are happy to work in and a water bottle.

I am a designer maker living and working in East Sussex.
I produce modern upholstered footstools. Useful objects, made well.
My practice is informed by the idea that “If you can’t fix it, you don’t own it”.
Alongside regular upholstery jobs (recovers, repairs, reupholstery), I run Rounded by. making & selling upholstered birchwood modern footstools; using 100% natural & recycled materials, these pieces are made for life, not landfill.
With none of the corners that so frustrate upholstery newcomers, I thought the Footstools made the perfect 1 day workshop experience and now run these monthly at The Paddock Studios, Lewes and as a guest tutor further afield. Folk come, learn, laugh, make & leave with their very own footstool.
I trained as a Prop Maker at Central School of Speech & Drama, and on graduation worked in Theatres & Festivals including The Young Vic, Stephen Joseph Theatre & Edinburgh Fringe. I fell into marketing films, working at Universal and then Paramount Pictures for years, before realising how much I missed making, so began training in traditional upholstery at the Thomas Calton Centre, and then in more depth at The Good Life Centre, both in London.
Three things I know : Never underestimate the power of a biscuit. Measure twice, cut once. It's risky wearing flip flops in the workshop.
