This beginners' dressmaking class gives you the tuition you need to make your own dress. Learn to use a dressmaking pattern, sew darts, use an overlocker on a sewing machine, insert an invisible zip and sew facings.

Workshop part one – morning.

  • Introduction to the sewing machine – threading.
  • Identifying and rectifying sewing problems.

  • Demonstration.
  • Introduction to commercial patterns – the different brands and difficulty levels.
  • How to read a commercial pattern.
  • Understanding your measurements.
  • Fabrics – understanding fabric types and their qualities.
  • Calculating and understanding fabric consumption.
  • Important questions to ask your fabric supplier.
  • Preparing fabrics ready for sewing.
  • How to lay your pattern pieces correctly.
  • How to cut out correctly.
  • Marking your pattern pieces ready for sewing.

  • Practical.
  • Sewing bust and waist darts – what can go wrong?
  • Using pins correctly.
  • Pressing/ironing professionally.
  • Using the overlocker for a professional finish.
  • Inserting an invisible zip.

We'll take a break to get some lunch and prepare for the fully practical afternoon session.

Workshop part one – afternoon.
- Facings – what are they used for?
  • Interlinings/interfacing and its uses.
  • Attaching facings, and sewing around curves (armholes and necklines).
  • Understanding seam allowances.
  • Pressing techniques.
  • Hemming.

At your dressmaking class, you'll be able to choose from a selection of different fabric styles to ensure you make a dress just right for you.

The focus of this sewing workshop is to teach you the dressmaking skills you need to be confident to make your own garments at home. This workshop does not focus on fitting or made-to-measure garments but you can move onto these more advanced techniques at a future workshop once you've mastered the basics.

Please note:
To save time, your dress will be pre-cut for you.

Once you have made your booking, your teacher will send you a size chart for you to select your size from. Check your emails (and spam folder just in case!), so you can request a specific size. Sizes 4-24 are available.

If you don't request a specific size, you will be able to select from random sizes on your teacher's reserves rail on the day of your class.

This workshop is suitable for 14 years old and above. All minors must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Knowledge required
This is a beginners workshop, but it is advised that you already know how to use a sewing machine to enjoy this class.

You could complete your teacher's Introductory Sewing workshop before trying this one to make this workshop more fun.

Your safety is important to us!

On entering, we will have sanitiser stations for you to to freshen up. All machinery, sewing stations, and tools you will be using, will be sanitised before you arrive, and between each session.
At your sewing station you will also have sanitiser wipes, should you feel you need to use them.
Our lavatories are communal, but they will be supplied with santiser wipes, hand wash and disposable towels.

Face masks:
You are welcome inside with or without a mask, but please respect the choices of others, should they choose to wear a mask or not.

Who we are:

The Fashion Box was founded in 2013.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins, with a post-graduate degree in Advanced Innovative Pattern Cutting, Craig (Mr Fashion Box!) embarked on a kaleidoscope of successful ventures within the fashion industry.

Craig is a qualified university lecturer, graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, with a Distinction in Academic Practice, teaching certificate.

During his time working in the fashion industry, he has worked alongside a huge selection of fashion houses, new designers and is a mentor to many university lecturers and fashion graduates.
He is also a former Collection Manager for Qasimi Homme, has worked alongside Sadie Clayton, and is currently working on production of a collection of clothing patterns for his own brand.

Craig has more than 25 years experience in teaching in universities and colleges, as well as with private clients. As a result, he is accomplished at getting the best out of both groups of students and one-to-one situations.

After 8 years at prestigious private Italian school, Istituto Marangoni, he left to pursue his dreams of opening his own fashion school, which resulted in The Fashion Box.

Craig is also former Head of Fashion at a London University, and is currently writing university programmes for fashion schools and universities worldwide.

He is a very patient, capable mentor and tutor, both to beginners and more experienced students.
