Although most people think of macrame as being a craze from the 1970s, this ancient craft actually has its roots in thirteenth century Arabia, where it was used to neatly finish the ends of handwoven textiles. These days, the art of creative knot tying can be used to craft anything from wonderful wall hangings and perfect DIY plant hangers, to coasters, bags and even jewellery - so if you’ve ever fancied getting crafty with rope but didn’t know where to start, our macrame classes in London will help to make all of your textile dreams come true!
If the only knots you’ve ever tied are on your shoelaces, don’t worry! Our macrame workshops are designed for a range of ages, abilities and experience levels, so whether you’re a knot novice searching for a new hobby or a DIY macrame master looking to level up your crafty skills, you’ll be right at home. Led by a local artisan with a wealth of creative textile experience, you’ll learn all the basic techniques - and they’ll stay on hand for the whole macrame class, so you’ll be able to avoid any craft catastrophes. Each workshop includes your own macrame kit, so you’ll receive all the rope and embellishments you need for your project - all you need to bring is yourself and your nimble fingers!
We’ve got a variety of macrame classes in London, so whether you want to make DIY plant hangers in Hackney, coasters in Camden or simply learn some general knot skills in Notting Hill, we’ve got you covered. Held in a bright and airy studio, the macrame workshop will begin with a warm welcome from your instructor, closely followed by an introduction to the craft. You’ll learn all about the history and traditions of knot-tying, and you’ll be able to see breathtaking examples from across the globe - as well as getting a closer look at the work of your talented teacher. You’ll be given a full demonstration, where you’ll learn the basic knots and discover how to read macrame patterns, so you’ll finally be able to tell your lark’s head from your half hitch. Then it’s time to flex those fingers and get creative! You’ll receive your own macrame supplies, with everything you need to complete your project, and your teacher will stay on hand to help you on your creative journey and untangle any macrame muddles.
Don’t fancy going solo? Don’t worry! If you’re ‘knot’ keen on heading off to one of our macrame workshops alone, why not grab your gang and get crafting together? Macrame classes make great social activities, so if you’re looking for unique birthday party ideas, planning a fun hen celebration, organising team building activities or even searching for date night ideas with a twist, why not gather your nearest and dearest and get knotting together? You’ll be able to relax and have fun, while you learn some brand new skills and take home a beautiful handmade textile project - what could be better than that?
Research has shown that craft is great for the mind, body and soul, so if you’ve been feeling the strain lately and want to escape the daily grind, a macrame class could be just what you need. The repetitive task of wrapping, weaving and knotting is almost meditative, and allows you to lose yourself in the crafty process, focusing on your fingers, the rope and your project. Whether you decide to go complex and make a beautiful beaded boho bag, or keep it simple with a set of cool DIY macrame coasters, you’ll finish the session feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take on the world again.
