Japanese Sashiko Jacket Embroidery Workshop

Make a beautiful piece of embroidered art at this workshop in London.

5 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests       £115 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

In this immersive workshop, you'll learn the Japanese art of sashiko embroidery, applying beautiful running stitch patterns to your choice of indigo or wine red natural cotton jacket. You'll master the fundamental techniques of this traditional craft while creating a wearable garment to take home.
Nervous about your embroidery skills? This activity embraces the slow, meditative nature of sashiko, making it perfect for beginners with no prior experience. The name 'sashiko' literally means 'little stab' – a reminder that this craft values patience over perfection.
Throughout the day at YICRAFTS studio, you'll discover both the rich cultural background and practical techniques of this Japanese embroidery tradition. Originally developed as a method for reinforcing or mending textiles, sashiko creates beautiful geometric patterns that add texture, warmth and visual interest to garments. The workshop provides comprehensive instruction in the basic principles and techniques, equipping you to continue your practice independently at home.
By the end of this how-to workshop, you'll experience the calming, mindful benefits of slow stitching while creating something both beautiful and functional.

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
