In this one-day weaving course in London, you will learn the basics of plain weave on a rigid heddle loom. This loom is a perfect starting point for beginners as it is an affordable, compact, and portable option, but the skills you learn here also transfer to both smaller and larger looms.
This hands-on workshop is designed to give you a solid foundation in weaving techniques. Before the class, you'll have a chance to pick out some colours for your warp, which I will prepare for you. When you arrive, you'll have a quick lesson (while sipping on a cuppa) on the basics of the loom and different types of weave and their uses.
As part of this creative activity, I will guide you through the entire process. You’ll learn how to balance warp and weft, combining materials and colours to bring out the best in your fabric, so you can feel confident when you start your project.
All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you'd like to add a more personal touch.
You'll leave the session feeling inspired and accomplished, with a solid understanding of weaving fundamentals and your very own hand-woven fabric to take home.

I am a painter and weaver from Northern Ireland, based in South East London.
I trained as an oil painter in Dublin and London before combining my painting practice with textiles. Knitting, crochet, sewing and embroidery have always been in my life. My granny and my mother made their own garments. Eventually these crafts were bound to make their way into my work. My own weaving journey began in 2020 and I've been teaching on small looms and rigid heddle looms for the past 3 years. I enjoy sharing my passion for traditional crafts and I particularly love working with colour and texture to create unique artworks. I'm always amazed by the ideas my students bring to classes - everyone brings their own perspective.
I host small, welcoming workshops in my art studio in Catford, SE6.
I'll provide everything you need - materials and looms, tea and biscuits - but it's always nice if you have a meaningful cloth or yarn that you want to repurpose in your artwork.
