What you'll do
If you've ever been curious about the publishing world or you'd like to learn more about graphic design, come along to this printing course at a studio in London and dive into the world of magazine printing!
During this five week course, you'll will work together with your instructor and fellow students as a team to create a group made publication. From idea conception, to creating content, editing and designing, you'll get to oversee the whole process, guided by your friendly tutor. Then, at the end of the course, you'll have your very own printed magazine!
Week one
- Introduction into magazines alongside an in depth presentation from Terra Firma's very own Editor in Chief.
- Collectively start to conceptualise the theme for your group magazine
Week two
- How to structure a magazine.
- The importance of collaboration and connection.
- How to distribute and sell your magazine.
Week three
Introduction into Adobe inDesign.
Week four
- How to select and collate images, edit text and create a visually interesting publication.
- How to design your front cover and spine.
Week five
Collectively designing your magazine. You will then have a finished PDF that is ready for print.
Two weeks later, you'll meet up again and your tutor will present each of you your copies of the magazine that you designed.

Your teacher
Sophie Willison is a freelance artist passionate about teaching. She has been self publishing her own magazine, terra firma, for almost a decade, bringing together artists from all over the world to collectively realise an annual theme.
Sophie has a keen interest in analogue photography, design, publishing, curating and editing and is always working on exciting new projects. Working part time as a photography assistant in a North London based school, she is always learning new skills and learning from her students.
She has guest lectured and given workshops at a variety of institutions from Guildford College, Westminster University and Parliament Hill school. She has run and successfully delivered workshops as part of Berridge, a gap year programme for students based in Normandy, France. She is currently designing a month-long studio art course as part of Oxbridge this July, taking place in Oxford.
