What you'll do

Get hooked on crochet with our beginner’s tutorial! Enjoy this relaxing craft as you get to grips with the simple skills you’ll need to stitch beautiful designs, with one of our craft experts on hand to guide you through the steps.

This workshop provides a wonderful introduction to the world of crochet, perfect if you’re a complete beginner. Through the course of the workshop, you’ll learn double stitch and treble stitch. You’ll also be shown how to create a chain, working in rows to create a tension square.

You’ll have a craft kit included, ensuring you’ve got the yarn and hook you need. It’s a great opportunity to pick up techniques you can then put into practice when you move on to other patterns.

Throughout the tutorial, you will be able to ask any crochet questions you may have.

Please note, our workshop spaces in some stores are located in open areas and we will endeavour to minimise interruption from other crafters.

Brilliant Intro to Crochet class taught by Jo at Wimbledon Hobbycraft who managed to teach a fab course despite us all arriving at different times due to traffic issues.

We learned casting on, simple chains, double and treble crochet and half treble. We were provided with a crochet hook, two nicely wrapped balls of wool (I got mustard and grey which are favourite colours) and a cotton bag.

I thought it was great value for money and feel confident enough that I bought more balls of wool the way out so I can try and crochet a small blanket before moving onto the granny squares course!

A one to one class was just what I needed. Having previously attended a one off beginner's class - where I actually learnt to crochet :-) there were a few things I either forgot or never quite grasped. Jackie went through everything with me and answered all my questions. Jackie is an amazing teacher and this a great session if you are struggling as a beginner. However, it would also be good for crocheters of any level.

Really great class. Perfect for absolute beginners and people like me who’ve had a go and messed up and then given up!

Jacque was a great teacher, really good rapport with everyone and reassuring when we all messed up at some point. She also had us ‘start from the middle’ so had some swatches ready for us to crochet into and it showed she had clearly given a lot of thought time and effort into setting us up for success.

The materials were lovely too, autumnal and great quality.

My 13 year old daughter and I loved this class with Jacqui! We'd previously tried to learn the very basics via YouTube and, sitting with Jacqui, were able to make sense of it all and see where we were going wrong. Very useful and great fun! We came away having learned to crochet a foundation chain, double stitch, treble stitch and half treble stitch, as well as how to tie off/start when switching yarns. We've both come home and crocheted a full scarf in the couple of days since the class - we're hooked!
Jacqui was very clear to follow, very patient and friendly - we'd both love to do another class with her to learn more crochet techniques. We'll be back!

A very useful introduction to crochet. There is no substitute for hands-on learning with live, in-person support. Wonderful to leave with the ability and materials to complete a project- or several.

I'd familiarised myself with some basics prior to the class by watching YouTube videos and making a few attempts at home. This was really helpful, but not essential as everything is covered in the class.

I appreciated the opportunity to ask about things I found confusing or difficult. It was a huge help to be able to physically pass my work to the teacher for help in figuring out where things went awry and to get tips for fixing my specific mistakes.

Jacqui was an amazing, helpful and thoughtful teacher. She was incredibly encouraging and made me feel very confident even though it was my first time at crochet. My favourite part was that it was clear a lot of thought had been put into the "how" of teaching, with foundation rows prepared for us to start on and get a rhythm before doing the tougher work of making our own foundation rows. I'm looking forward to trying another crochet course with Jacqui in the future!

No was a fantastic teacher who taught my 13year old grandaughter to crochet yesterday…she was patient with tilly and taught her from scratch how to crochet a really good teacher. The venue was lovely and the gift package of crochet and wool was of great quality.

It was an overall good experience. Only learned the chain and double. Had a quick brush on the treble. Thought the workshop could be a bit longer as to accommodate the speed of the learners which were mostly real beginners. We spent nearly 50 minutes only to get people done with a chain of 11 loops. Material provided was nice.

Im very glad tye class was away from the shop floor as it meant we could really focus and not worry about getting it wrong. id definitely look to decorating the space a bit more though as it didnt feel very much like a purpose workshop space.

The teacher, Jacqui, was very hands on with us and so patient. She practically held our hands as we learned the different stitches. It's much easier to learn a skill in person, and Jacqui ensured that we placed our hands exactly the correct way in order to crochet successfully, and become more proficient. Having had little practice with crocheting, and even less confidence, I feel that I am on my way to being able to create beautiful stitchery.

This was a beginners crochet lesson, something I had never tried before. It was also my first time in Hobbycraft store.
Our tutor Jacqui was very welcoming and a brilliant teacher, very patient and easy to understand . All the staff in store were very friendly and encouraging . As I had arrived early I had a good look around the store and I was amazed at the quality and quantity of different craft materials.
Jacqui guided us through the initial steps of crochet and helpfully explained when we went wrong.
I now need to practice and I would definitely book again.

This was a really enjoyable class. I have done a bit of crochet before, but never really got to grips with it. Jacquie is a great teacher, really good fun, very patient and has really helped and inspired me. I bought some wool and now want to see what other classes there are. This is the second class I have done and it is really good fun.
The only negative comment I have to make is about the parking. There is a 2 hour parking limit outside Hobbycraft. By the time you arrive at the class, do the class and get ready to leave, there is virtually no time to look around and buy anything. There were loads of things I wanted - I could have spent loads, but just didn't have the time

Really great class with Jacqui this morning. She was so reassuring and totally happy for us to ask the same question over and over again! She created a really friendly atmosphere from the moment we arrived and so we all felt relaxed with each other. The venue is nice and warm - important in the winter - and it's useful to have all the equipment there in the shop either for her to show (like different weights of yarn) or for us to buy (although absolutely NO hard sell which is classy).

We learned to make the initial slipknot, crochet our base chain and then do double and triple crochet.

It was excellent value for money and the length was perfect. Any longer and we would have lost focus more than we already did.

It was great to be told what could be available next, which includes the weekly crochet club.

I learned a lot, not just crocheret skills but also my own shortcomings (my concentration levels are certainly finite I need plenty of time to let things sink in)

Jacqui was a star! Warm and friendly; bags of enthusiasm and empathy and humour; brilliant when it comes to explaining things. And she was so incredibly patient too, especially with a clot like me!

At the end of the workshop, Jacqui kindly took us round the relevant materials section of the store. She offered plenty of hints and tips when making our choices, which I valued greatly.

Brilliant value for money, the best £20 I've spent in a long time. I felt incredibly enthused, and grateful that Jacqui offered us plenty of pointers for future learning: books, online videos and the like.

The teacher was engaged and engaging. The venue was relaxed and so many goodies to contemplate. I learned the basics and a few options to explore. My only slight issue was the yarn as it tended to shred very easily. A lovely way to spend the afternoon and much more helpful than YouTube.

Thank you Jo, that was the furthest I’ve got with crochet and I’m itching to get home and practise. Jo was gentle and patient and gave each of us time to work with her. Materials were useful and chunky yarn made life easier

I had a great experience at this class and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in starting crochet. The time flew past and I left feeling confident to practice on my own. I was reassured that I can come into store and ask staff any questions I have in the future. We went though basic and techniques and had the opportunity to look at patterns and learn how to read them. I only have positive feedback, thanks to the team at Hobbycraft Wimbledon!

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. The tutors were amazing, and made the whole thing an enjoyable experience. A massive thanks to them both. They gave me confidence and were encouraging and were very patient. The materials provided were excellent too. I would highly recommend this workshop and came away very enthusiastic. I look forward to attending the Friday sessions.

Fantastic introductory class. Jacqui is an amazingly motivating, kind and supportive teacher. Suggestions for further learning/support were excellent and I left feeling hopeful that my skills would (eventually) improve to the point of usefulness! The venue was bright, clean and welcoming and I consider the class good value for money. My only suggestion would be for equipment packs to include smaller crochet hooks (or an option to choose sizes) rather than having to purchase separately.
