Join this private pottery class in London and learn wheel throwing within a contemporary working ceramics studio guided by practising artists.
These focused sessions at SET Ceramics are designed for individuals or small groups of up to four, offering you dedicated studio time to explore the pottery wheel at your own pace. Whether you're a first-timer or a more experienced maker, your teacher will tailor the session to you. You can focus on foundational techniques like centring and shaping clay or work on more advanced development to refine your form.
Rather than following a rigid format, the class responds to exactly what you want to explore. As SET Ceramics is both an active studio and a learning environment, you'll gain genuine insight into real studio practice while working alongside professional ceramicists. It's a supportive setting that allows plenty of time for making, discussion, and experimentation.
You will:
  • Learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing – Master the techniques of centring clay and shaping forms.
  • Explore techniques suited to your experience level – Receive personalised guidance to build your confidence or level up your skills.
  • Create several small ceramic pieces – Produce unique pottery under expert instruction.
  • Work with a practising ceramic artist – Enjoy a small, supportive studio setting that encourages creativity.
When you've finished making, you'll select your favourite pieces to be professionally finished. A studio technician will glaze and fire your work, which will be ready for collection in approximately two to three weeks.
This session offers an empowering way to reconnect with your hands and leaves you with your own handmade keepsakes to cherish.

SET Ceramics

SET Ceramics is a contemporary community pottery studio in central London, run by arts organisation and registered charity SET. Based in a former cobbler’s shop near Fenchurch Street Station, the space functions as both a working ceramics studio for members and an artist-led learning environment.
Alongside studio memberships for practising makers, we offer courses, private classes and team workshops led by working ceramic artists. Each programme is shaped by the tutor’s own practice, giving participants insight into real studio approaches rather than standardised pottery classes.
Sessions are small (typically 4-6 people) to allow focused guidance, experimentation, and the development of individual ideas. With pottery wheels, hand-building stations, glazing facilities and kiln firing included, the emphasis is on meaningful making and building confidence with clay.
SET Ceramics welcomes beginners, independent makers, and artists looking to work within a supportive and creative studio community.
