Join this wheel throwing taster class in London and discover the captivating art of pottery in a friendly workshop. The session kicks off with your experienced tutor providing a detailed demonstration, where you will learn how to centre clay and form a cylinder – the essential starting point for any potter! This initial guidance ensures you feel confident before you begin.
Then, you'll take a seat at your own potter's wheel for a truly hands-on activity. You will learn how to work with the clay, practising how to centre it and then gently manipulate it into your own unique cylinder or bowl shape. Throughout this creative process, your tutor will be there to offer as much or as little assistance as you need, making it a perfect introduction for beginners.
At the culmination of your pottery making experience:
  • You can choose up to 2 favourite pieces, which will then be carefully fired and glazed for you in one of 20 beautiful studio colours.
  • Your masterpieces will be ready for collection 3–4 weeks later, or you can opt to have them conveniently posted to you for the cost of the postage.
This enjoyable workshop offers a genuinely rewarding experience, allowing you to mould shapeless clay into tangible objects with your own hands. You’ll leave with up to two beautiful, self-made ceramic pieces and the satisfying accomplishment of mastering a new craft.
We suggest wearing sensible shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting clay on! We also recommend keeping your nails relatively short for the class. You’re welcome to bring your own apron, though aprons will also be provided.

  • 5/5 from George, attended Jul 2026: Sophie and I had a fantastic time getting to grips with the basics and learning how to throw on a wheel. A bit more stuck in the mud than floating like Cassius Clay, Vanessa our class teacher helped to ensure we all managed to learn and take much of the process in, even if my mind was left spinning faster than the pottery wheel at first! If you’re considering the class but not sure if it’ll be for you, don’t hesitate and give it a go - you’ll have a really fun time.

  • 5/5 from Charlie Ellerton, attended May 2026: My and my partner went for the afternoon taster session. What a wonderful learning experience. We went in knowing absolutely nothing, and have come out having made 3 pieces of pottery to add to the kitchen. Lovely calm space with great guidance. Would highly recommend for trying something completely new!

We learned some basic spinning approaches for beginners and got to play around with making different shapes in a low-pressure environment with help when we needed it. Even got to keep a couple of our favourite pieces! I’d definitely come again.

Our teacher gave very clear instruction and had the perfect balance of us producing our own work but being on hand to help get us back on track. The session was fun and we were surprised with what we were able to create. I would highly recommend the beginner class and will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful morning.

Adam was an enthusiastic and patient teacher throughout, expertly guiding us beginners to perfect our first cylinder pots shaped on the wheel! The Sheen Pottery studio is a lovely light and airy space for small groups to try their hands at new skills shaping clay. I’m excited to return and collect my fired and glazed pots. This taster session has definitely given me the confidence to participate in a longer pottery course at the studio in the future.

I was given the pottery class as a Christmas present and went on my own, but I felt very comfortable as part of the small, relaxed group. I really had a brilliant time and am hoping to go back.

SHEEN POTTERY was started in 2001 by potter Lindy Barletta in an industrial workshop, things have moved on since then and we have a beautiful, calm and creative, high street studio in London SW14. It is a relaxing hub & must visit studio for anyone wanting to learn the joys making in clay. Lindy has taught for 25 years, many students going on to become keen potters with their own studios. Clay makes us happy, you use your head, hands and heart to make a pot and we are waiting to share this delightful experience with you.
All classes are taught by professional trained potters who have a passion for teaching, sharing their love of ceramics and their knowledge for this ancient and traditional craft with you. Tailor made fun, creative and challenging group sessions can be booked for 6-12 people.
We provide classes, courses and studio membership, suitable for all levels, including beginners to advanced. On ClassBento we are offering the Introductory Taster Session which is a fun 2.5 hour session with a maximum of 6 students. You will receive excellent one to one tutor time and the small group size allows for an intimate and in depth experience, allowing you to really focus on learning the skills required to make on the potters wheel. You will have fun, there will be laughter, shared joy and probably a little bit of mess!
You can keep your best or favorite 2 master pieces and choose one of the 20 beautiful studio glaze colours for us to later fire and apply. The ceramic process takes time, after being made on the wheel, the pots are dried slowly, bisque fired to become ceramic, glazed by our studio technician and then high fired again to melt the glaze onto the pot. It is a fascinating process and if you wanted to learn more we can guide you further.
