Kintsugi Workshop

An introductory pottery class to Japanese art of Kintsugi.

2.5 hours - 3 hours Class size 1 to 15 (public classes), 6 to 32

label £50 - £54 (£50 for Public class, £54 for Private class)

Kintsugi is an ancient art form that celebrates the Japanese philosophy of the beauty of imperfection. It involves putting broken pieces of pottery back together by embracing the cracks using the gold mica powder blowing method.

In this class that honours the traditional Japanese art of fixing with gold, an experienced and friendly teacher from Art4Space will guide you every step of the way so that you leave with beautiful symbolic pottery to treasure.

As well as enjoying the hands-on experience with all the materials provided, you will also learn a little about the history and philosophy of Kintsugi. We create up to two classic Japanese bowls. You also have the option to bring your own crockery (vase, plate, bowl, cup) and we can explore how to fix this the best way.

Join your teacher in their creative, inclusive and welcoming environment and enjoy this unique London activity with friends for an extra special birthday party or team-building event idea.

Your teachers are people who love the reflection, symbolism and art of Kintsugi. We have mastered the best results – one of our teachers recently returned from living in Japan and follows the wabi-sabi philosophy to domestic recycling. So don’t throw that pot away, come and join us! Plus we provide you with up to 2 traditional Japanese bowls.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue and please note it's £54 per person for private bookings for 2-2.5 hour workshop plus travel expenses when we come to you. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

Wonderful class. All resources provided and plenty of choice. Great host with drinks and chocolates as an added bonus. Wonderful clear and calm teaching which meant I came home with two wonderful pieces. Really would recommend.

John was a great teacher who was calm and patient and gently funny. His guided instructions were precise and carefully delivered so we could proceed on our own for the second item that we worked on, however he was available for help when needed. Venue was great- v cheerful space and not cold (v cold day). Great play list too. Thank you

The venue was good - not cold, considering how cold it was outside and I appreciated the sign outside.

John and his assistant were super patient, clear in directions and helped us all to achieve the goal of the session = to create a Kintsugi piece! The drinks were good and loved the music in the background.

The pieces to select from were diverse and beautiful! The time also seemed long but with the gluing process sometimes being a pain, it was just enough time for two pieces! I would definitely recommend!

A brilliant, fun way to spend Sunday afternoon with friends and family! Warm, friendly welcome and clear instructions and guidance from a lovely teacher. The purpose built studio has great facilities and it’s inspiring to see the artwork beautifully displayed. All materials were supplied and a big selection of good quality, attractive ceramic bowls were included. All in all a very enjoyable activity and would highly recommend.

The whole event was fantastic and I really enjoyed breaking and reassembling the pot I brought along. With the guidance of our patient and extremely helpful tutor I wound up with an object that I am secretly rather proud of! I will deffo be recommending this to anyone who I think would be interested.

A very relaxed and friendly session!

I get a little anxious trying new things and going to new places by myself. The venue is really easy to find on maps and there is a clear sign out front.

The teacher, John, created a calming environment where you felt comfortable to ask questions and let your creativity take you. John went at an easy pace where the steps were clearly broken down and you were learning together. You have the opportunity to make two pieces, the first where you are learning together, and the second to put learning into practice.

The session provides you with everything you will need, including snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). You can also purchase a kit after the class with the tools, so you can carry on at home.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can't wait to put my new skills to practice at home. Thank you

Lovely course with patient and attentive tutor - (John) Everything was provided and set out ready for our arrival. Instructions were clear and I was amazed at how much we achieved in such a short time. Drinks were provided and great background sound track. Thank you!

It was a really nice workshop.
It had all the materials needed and we took home some pieces we fixed. I also managed to fix my own bowl.

The teacher was friendly and answered all the questions.
I think 3 hours is a good time to learn the technique.

I had so much fun, and it was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. John, our teacher, was patient and really nice! We actually made two objects, and you could see the improvement on the second piece. The venue is also lovely, quiet and full of plants and art. Would definitely recommend!

The experience was a lot of fun, our teachers were very helpful and the atmosphere great. The glue was uncooperative but that's life. It was a very pleasant experience and I'd highly recommend it to groups, pairs and solo individuals, no prior knowledge of anything creative required. It's a moment away from the noise of life and the doing really focuses you on the action in front of you and nothing else.

Had a really great time and didn't even realize that the company actually use these classes to fund kids program in the day time. Amazing! Material provided were great and the teacher was patient and funny. There was also wine served and there were snacks but we were too busy trying to maximize our time with the art itself. Would thoroughly recommend

She was knowledgable, patient and super supportive - a real asset to Art fit Space - I would recommend this workshop especially if Natty is leading it - Brilliant 5 star Teacher

The teachers were wonderful - knowledgeable, attentive, kind and able to skilfully demonstrate for even the slowest learner (me). The venue - cool, inspiring creativity and calm. Excellent value. And now I know that it supports local artists and donates to mental health charities, even more so… I totally recommend this class!

Nice teachers. Kind and friendly. Would have great to be a bit more proactive with helping students by circulating. Not very much guidance or instruction given which may suit some people but I would prefer more guidance.

My daughter and I had an amazing time at Kintsugi workshop. We have put together a broken piece of our own ceramics and the bowls and dishes provided by the centre.
We were part of a lively groups and could relax and focus at the same time. The teacher was knowledgeable and lead the group well. Thank you for an experience to remember.

Noble Fox May 2023

Wonderful session. Good teachers who were very helpful. Workshop is set on lovely grounds and easy to find. Nice refreshments and well laid out workshop. To be fair the only reason they got four stars instead of five just on the cost for 10 people, it would have been nice to have a slightly cheaper price for a big group booking. Besides that there was nothing to fault. It’s a gods first date idea or family activity or even just for yourself if you need a little me time. Highly recommend it. Thank you guys and keep up the good work.

Ashley Phillips Apr 2023

It was relaxing and enjoyable to focus on the process of kintsugi. Thanks for great instruction and information.

Maria Bren Apr 2023

The teacher was lovely!
The venue was wonderful, and the hospitality (thee, coffee, wine) was great. The little dishes we broke and repaired were lovely too. The instructions re the ‘how to‘ were good though could be tweaked a bit as most of us ended up with slightly messy results… however, the teacher was interested to hear from participants about what they had seen on YouTube re techniques and try these out herself there and then with great results … Altogether I much enjoyed the evening and have worked some more on my gold line repairs at home my little dishes look beautiful now!

Charlotte Bennett Mar 2023

The venue is great and the teachers are welcoming and engaged. But also professional and everything (tools, materials etc) for the class was organised thoughtfully. There are generous and delicious refreshments too and all that made the class feel relaxed. The Kintsugi lesson was interesting and fun and there was the opportunity to make several different pieces. Really enjoyable

Craig Savery Mar 2023

If it was prepped a bit more beforehand it would have been great. Lovely Teachers. Just needed more information and for them to have a deeper understanding of the workshop

Teacher's response

Thanks Craig – it means a lot to us that you have taken the time to leave a review. We will learn from the glue and application process for next time. Gemma and I have taken this on board. Enjoy your pots and take care.
