Ready to dive into the captivating world of printmaking for you & a friend? Look no further than this immersive 1-day workshop were you'll learn the traditional craft of Japanese woodblock printmaking from the early 17th Century Ukiyo – E Period. And the best bit… you can enjoy the experience with a friend for free.

Don't worry if you're new to printmaking, as your expert host, Graeme, will guide you step by step through the process. You'll gain hands-on experience and learn about a range of techniques and processes.

Working on multi-colored printed images throughout the day you will learn about inks, brush inking woodblocks, making color blends, preparing printmaking papers, setting up registration, and editioning. Cohesively learning about the subtleties involved in this craft and images made by artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige.

In terms of designs, you will initially work on a combination of precut blocks to get to grips with the subtlety of the process.

In the afternoon you will get to create your own designs, transfer and, cut them out of blocks provided.

By the end of the day, you'll be able to take home a set of completed prints, showcasing your newly acquired skills.

What to expect from this one-of-a-kind workshop
Start 10.30am - Introducing Ukiyo-E, the process and tools. Demonstration – Understanding multiplate inking and printing.
11 – 12 pm - Multiplate Printing Session.
Break 12pm – 12.15pm
12.15 – 1pm - Demonstration – Transferring and Cutting Your Design.
Lunch 1pm – 2pm - Bring a packed lunch or visit the Orchard Cafe.
2pm - 4pm - Creating & Printing your Designs.

Your Host
Graeme Hughes is an artist, printmaker and creative educator. Teaching fine art printmaking at The Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University since 2013, where he works as a Senior Tutor today.
Teaching printmaking across the fine art programs, running creative educational workshops at The Ashmolean and Natural History Museum’s and, leading the ‘Opportunity Oxford’ and ‘UNIQ’ outreach courses for the university. Courses supporting educational access for students who come from under-represented communities.
Graeme studied Printmaking at The Royal College of Art, going onto run his own fine art printmaking studio collaborating with artists and makers. Following this he was invited to teach printmaking as a research fellow in The Royal Academy schools between 2012 & 2013, where he developed a practice encompassing research across printmaking, drawing, and casting.
