Looking for chilled-out London activities to help you escape the hustle and bustle of the city? Sit back, relax and get creative with clay at this pottery making workshop in Stoke Newington!
During this beginner-friendly class, you'll learn all the tips and tricks needed to transform handmade clay into bespoke pottery pieces. Your expert guide will demonstrate hand-building techniques using coils and slabs before covering wheel throwing as you prepare to get hands-on with your clay!
Whether you're a complete beginner or a more experienced clay crafter, this workshop is a great chance to unwind in a London pottery studio as you let your creative side take over.
At the end of the class, your beautiful pottery pieces will be taken away to be biscuit fired and glazed, ready to collect after 4 weeks to display at home or give away as handmade gifts!
Please note:
- This Workshop is only for age 11 or above.
- Your finished pieces will be fired and glazed, ready to collect 4 weeks after the class.
- A materials fee of £5 per piece of pottery kept is NOT included in the class and is payable on the day of your workshop.
- Pieces are ready around 4 weeks after the class, please pick them up as they will be kept in storage for up to one month. If not collected in time they may be disposed of.
- No cancellations or reschedules allowed.
- There is no air conditioning in the studio, so please bring water and dress for the heat!
*** Please note that due to the nature of clay, results may differ from expectation, including but not limited to:
- Glaze may vary from examples and are for reference only
- Texture created may not shown in the final result
- Pots will appear smaller from what you created from class, since clay have a 15% shrinkage
- Pots may not be completely cleaned and may have small lumps of clay
- Pots may be cracked or exploded

A rare and hidden pottery Eden in the heart of east London, Stoke Newington. Cernamic studio in Stoke Newington was founded, created, and built during the first lockdown of the pandemic, through hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Nam and Susi two professional ceramicists run this fun and affordable pottery studio open for everyone from all walks of life.
Nam Tran is an award-winning practitioner who gives lectures and demos at universities and exhibits internationally. A ceramic lecturer and head of the departments in design and multi-media with Kensington and Chelsea college. Nam specialises in wheel-thrown raku, bringing years of experience and craftsmanship to every object made.
Tran's work is focused primarily on exploring the physical properties of clay and material experimentation is a strong characteristic of his work. He has been developing making enclosed forms that are much stronger than open forms and therefore resonates well with the alternative firing technique he uses. His work is dominated by thrown pieces that subtly echo the urban roots and conceptual design. Nam Tran first made pots as a teenager on a wheel in his own bedroom and remembers being captivated by the experience. With his unique alternatives methods and approach to ceramics, Nam Tran identifies rules and manipulates and bends them.

I recently attended a ceramic pottery class in Stoke Newington, and it was a blast! The instructions were clear, making the two hours fly by. However, the class size posed a challenge; with only two teachers, some struggled more than others, and a few went unnoticed. Despite this, I managed to craft two small pots with the option for glazing. Overall, a fun experience, but perhaps a smaller class size would enhance individual attention. I'd still recommend it!

I went with my partner to the 2-hour Pottery Making Taster Workshop as a birthday gift. The experience was absolutely amazing. We would like to thank the teacher Christophe (from The Great Pottery Throw Down on Channel 4) ????.
Christophe was very patient, assuring and explained the wheel throwing techniques with great care and attention to detail. At no point did we feel like we were being rushed. Christophe was happy to help us correct our mistakes and we really appreciated that he would also explain the cause of the mistake and what he was doing to rectify it.
We had enough time to make 3 creations of our own during the 2 hours. I would highly recommend this taster session and I look forward to trying out the hand making session at some point in the future.
Lastly, I would also like to add that the venue has a warm, friendly atmosphere with great music. There are amazing creations on the shelves in the venue. If you are a Nintendo fan like myself you will be impressed!
Things to notes:
To enter the building, you may need to call the number at the front of the large black gate.

I went with friends and it was our first experience with pottery and certainly wont be our last! We enjoyed it so much, it was de-stressing, fun and a chance to get creative. Paul, Layila and Anitha were super friendly, very patient with us and explained things in detail. We also had few tries so certainly got better by the end of the taster class!

Lovely welcome from Cherry. Inspiring to look around the studio beforehand and see what people had made.
Amy was a great teacher: very clear in her demos and explanations before we started and then calm and encouraging as we did it ourselves.
It clearly takes time to master the techniques but she made sure we didn’t go horribly wrong and they we ended up with some pieces were proud of.
There was a fun atmosphere too with quite a bit of happy chat. Altogether a great way to spend a Sunday morning and I’d like to do more.

Booked for my friend's 60th. I'd never done this and have no artistic talent at all. We both really enjoyed it and were fairly successful. We made two items which we left to be fired and glazed. The teacher was great and the steps were easy to follow. I would have loved a 3 hour session because there were too many students to see to in 2 hours and it would give you more time to experiment/practise

Beautiful charming studio. The instructors Rosa, Cherie and Suzy were so helpful, fun and informative and struck the perfect balance between giving you independence and also stepping in if you wanted them to, to guarantee you came away with some pieces you were happy with. Absolutely loved this class! I attended with my partner and neither of us had ever done pottery before. Rosa was an extremely good teacher and was accompanied by other helpers who would walk round and give helping hands when needed. Despite the class being quite full on the day we attended, you would get help instantly if you were struggling. We attended the 3 hour session and got to make more pieces than I expected - we made 4 things each and if you were quicker you could make more. You can choose which pieces you want to keep at the end and you pay £5 per piece, which I think is very reasonable given the team will glaze the pieces (blue, white or transparent) and add handles for any you want to turn into a mug. Loved this workshop and think the price was fair! Would recommend to anyone.

We had a fantastic experience doing the tasters pottery class with no prior experience. The instructors are super helpful and help you make beautiful creations. My only advice would be the signings on the bottom of each pottery we took back home. The words could have been smaller and it takes away from the polished look of the pottery. Otherwise, we loved the experience and they created an amazing handle for one of our items. Wish the course could have been longer as we really enjoyed ourselves.

Great instructors who are very friendly and most of all patient. I messed up a lot, and they kept coming back to check up on me. Not only did they help to make sure I was actually able to take something away but they really take the time to teach the technique so you can do it yourself. It's a really fun experience where you don't feel pressure, giving you a lot of time to start from scratch if needed or whether you want to make multiple pieces.

I bought this workshop as a gift for my friends birthday and we had such a lovely experience! We were both complete novices to pottery making so it was great to get to experience two different techniques in one session. Nam was a great teacher who was very knowledgeable but explained things in a way that could be understood by someone who had no experience (like ourselves!). Ari who was helping Nam was also great and super helpful. Overall it was a great experience and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for something relaxing and different to do in London. Rosa's ten years' experience teaching middle school kids equipped her perfectly to respond to the very varied needs of our class. Every explanation was crystal clear, backed up by solid grounding in physics, and demonstrated expertly. She was also very warm and encouraging with us all, making sure that we were aware that a range of outcomes was possible. The pace of the class was excellent - we had plenty of time to work on our pieces whilst also benefitting from Rosa's experience and troubleshooting help. I don't think you could find a better tutor for an introduction to pottery!

This was the second taster workshop I attended - I’ve been giving them as birthday presents to any friends who want to try throwing - both sessions were so much fun!
The teachers are great, and Nam and Susie are so lovely. You can tell they just love to make and create. The class gives you a very thorough overview on throwing, and you get a long way in 2 hours.
Will definitely be going back in the autumn to do the 6 or 8 week classes and can’t wait to get started!

Rosa did a fantastic job of leading the Saturday morning workshop, bringing lots of energy, humour and enthusiasm to the session. We had great fun learning how to use the wheel and made 3 items per person. Cherry and Ren were also available to support, so there was always someone to ask for help or advice. Overall the class was really well run, with a very fun vibe and I would definitely recommend it to other beginners wanting to try out pottery or for just something different to do for an occasion! I had the 3 hour class. The class was good but I felt that a lot of time was used to explain how to use the wheel and although needed the amount taken was too long and took away from the time to work on the wheel and if felt like the time spent explaining was used to fill the time. The hand modelling was fun and overall class was good.

My partner and I were thrilled with this experience. It was even better than we anticipated. Rosa was an incredible teacher and we both felt we left with the key basics of pottery making. The class was the perfect mix of theory and practise, with enough time to play and experiment on your own. We really liked that we had multiple opportunities to make something on the pottery wheel, and that we got to do hand-shape pottery in the final stage of the workshop. I booked this class as a birthday present for my girlfriend and we were both incredibly impressed with the whole experience.
Our class was led by Nam who explained everything step by step, with little breaks to help if anyone was struggling but also gave us all lots of creative freedom to try different techniques. There were also a group of assistants providing tips throughout the session who were all so helpful and enthusiastic.
We’re so pleased to hear a new studio has opened in Deptford (where we from) so we will certainly be heading for another class!

I was just a once-off potter to the studio as I do not live in London.
The studio is light and airy and I was warmly welcomed by Kam. I didn’t take part in the class but watched the tutors. They were patient and attentive with each pupil and I was surprised at the level achieved by these new potters. This happens because the teaching is excellent.

Our teacher was very engaging and explained the process clearly before we were let loose on the clay by ourselves. The first item was made along with his instruction and then the other 2 items were made with his and the team's supervision if required.
The studio was big and the class did not feel at all cramped. The way the class was set out, it was clear to see everything that the teacher was demonstrating.
I had always wanted to do this sort of class and it didn't disappoint! The time went so quickly and I enjoyed it so much. I now want to book a longer course after the taster session.

Great class, very didactic and also very flexible - the teacher was willing to step back or assist you more as you wished. Effective technique allows for a pleasant experience and the option to have the pieces after for a small fee is great (I would not have wanted to have it embedded in the price). Nice studio spacious and well lit, but don't come for a luxurious venue. Tram is super nice and makes the experience worth it.

An excellent way to quickly learn the basics and make some pottery on a wheel. Great teacher, with two extra staff members to help when you get into tricky spots. All materials and aprons provided. The main noise was coming from someone who was washing up and was having a small talk conversation so I think it could have been avoided.
Suggestions for improvement:
- ask other people in the studio to be quiet during demonstration.
- I think one item should come free with the class rather than having to pay £5 on top. I'd be happy to pay £5 per extra pieces thereafter.

Beautiful studio.
As a beginner I knew absolutely nothing about pottery. The staff were attentive, energetic and passionate about what they do. It was a large class, but I never felt like I couldn't get the support when I asked for it.

The experience was great It was the first time for me and my husband and we really enjoyed it. The teacher was friendly and explained step by step what to do and how to do it.

Rosa was an amazing and supportive teacher. Environment was super collaborative and inviting, and it was just a whole lot of fun. You learn a lot and class format was perfect as you get to learn both the wheel and hand pottery.

Thoroughly enjoyed my first time having a go at some pottery on the wheel at Cernamics I booked the throwing taster session for my mum and I as a birthday gift and we both loved it. The teachers were very thorough in their demo and patient with everyone as we battled to get out clay centred. Absolutely loved the pieces we made and am really looking forward to picking them up once they’ve been glazed. Highly recommend!

Such a fun experience First time doing pottery, the place is lovely and the staff were awesome, plenty of them too so help was on hand when it was inevitably needed! Perfect balance of getting involved but with help so we could walk away with a good looking pot or 2. Really good value for money.

Such a cool and lovely studio to get to work in! The teacher, Rosa, was amazing! Along with Isabella, who came around and helped us as we worked. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the process of spinning clay. Would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in learning more about pottery or even those who do know some about it already!

This was SUCH a great experience! The studio had a lovely relaxed vibe and our teacher Nam was fantastic,he demonstrated everything really clearly and with humour and constantly checked that we were ok,getting the hang of it and most of all enjoying it,which I definitely did! Loved the class. The teacher Rosa was great, and very helpful. Super excited to see how our pots come out. Only downside was that Rosa and Isabella were very attentive to everyone so sometimes you had to wait a bit for help or support.

The class was great, the teacher was very helpful but also let us explore things by ourselves. Everything was provided during the class and even at the end you're able to choose which of your pots you want to send to the oven to glaze and pick up at later time. 100% would recommend.

Really lovely session, our teacher was super helpful and clearly very skilled at throwing - but always made us feel like we were doing great (even if we probably weren't). We've come away with 3 pieces of pottery we really love and an amazing evening feeling like we learnt something new. Would recommend to anyone.
