What you'll do
The Great British Woodshop practical series classes are a good follow-on from their skills classes where you can take the knowledge you have learned and put it to practical use in a more targeted or focused way.
This class focuses on the three essential power tools every homeowner who wants to DIY’it and build things will need.
Your friendly tutor will go through all the features of the battery-powered drill, jigsaw and circular saw, giving you a brilliant overview of these core tools and their uses.
Once you have finished the operational aspects of the tools you will use them in different scenarios that are typical in the home:
Drill
- Drilling large holes with a hole-saw in plasterboard for installing downlighters
- Drilling for wall fixings
- Drilling metal
- Drilling sheet metal
- Drilling brick
Jigsaw:
- Cutting curves in timber
- Cutting at angles
- Cutting metal
- Cutting holes
- Cutting spaces in a countertop for sinks and hobs
Portable circular saw:
- Cutting large panels
- Cutting mitres
- Cutting at angles
- Plunge cutting
- Dado’ing and grooving
- Using simple jigs to help you cut accurately

What you'll get

What to bring
- Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work and sensible shoes.
- There is a local shop nearby if you wish to buy lunch or you can bring a packed lunch with you.
- If you have some of your own tools and would like to learn how to use them properly, then you are welcome to bring them and use them on the course. We have a fully equipped workshop so there is no need to bring anything, but some students like to bring their own.
Your teacher
At the Great British Woodshop, students of all abilities are given a warm welcome at our large and fully tooled workshop in West Byfleet, Surrey.
Courses are run by woodworking craftsman and television presenter David Free. DRB certified, David has been practising woodwork for 40 years and has been teaching all ages for 20 of those. David is passionate about sharing his woodwork and DIY knowledge with others.
