Designed for the complete beginner, this class will help you master basic woodworking techniques in a fully equipped West Byfleet workshop. You'll cover different tools, watch demonstrations of equipment and gain all the skills you need for necessary household DIY projects, including hanging shelves, repairing cupboard doors, flat pack furniture and using battery tools.
Don't worry if you're not usually the type to tackle woodworking, as your expert teacher will be on hand to provide step-by-step support along with all of the equipment and materials you need — so you can relax and enjoy your day of DIY!
In this class, you'll cover:
- Drawing plans and working from them.
- Battery-powered drills.
- Different types of squares and their uses.
- Marking techniques and measuring on metal and wood.
- Drilling.
- Drill bits (twist drills, brad point, masonry, Forstner bits, hinge bits, speed bits)
- Profile gauges.
- Plum lines.
- Hand planes.
- Chisels.
- Fasteners (nails, screws, wall fixings, concrete anchors, expanding and cam fixings)
- Handsaws, hacksaws, coping saws.
- Files and rasps.
- Mitre blocks and Bench hooks.
- Timber selection for your projects.

- Making basic joints (lap joints, half joints, mortise and tenon, pocket screws, box and dovetail joints)

At the Great British Woodshop, students of all abilities are given a warm welcome at our large and fully tooled workshop in West Byfleet, Surrey.
Courses are run by woodworking craftsman and television presenter David Free. DRB certified, David has been practising woodwork for 40 years and has been teaching all ages for 20 of those. David is passionate about sharing his woodwork and DIY knowledge with others.
