At the Great British Woodshop, students of all abilities are given a warm welcome at our large and fully tooled workshop in West Byfleet, Surrey.

Courses are run by woodworking craftsman and television presenter David Free. DRB certified, David has been practising woodwork for 40 years and has been teaching all ages for 20 of those. David is passionate about sharing his woodwork and DIY knowledge with others.

I decided to put myself on a basic DIY course while on redundancy to make good use of my time. I’ve done bits and pieces of DIY before but never really knew the proper basics and wanted to increase my confidence. I’ve started with the drilling and shelf fitting course and will definitely be back for more (& will bring my children too). Really patient instructor with a huge (& thankfully warm) workshop who took me right back to basics and gave me a full grounding in the different fittings etc for different walls. Plenty of time to watch and then put into practice and so I now feel fully equipped to tackle my own projects. Gave me lots of tips on good tools to buy etc too. Looking forward to joining other courses in the future.

Very useful woodworking class with Dave in his well equipped workshop. Mix of practical work on mortice & tenon, biscuit and pocket joints together with theory on joints and wood grain. Although I'd have liked a bit more practical work and a bit less theory!

This was a great introductory class if you are clueless about DIY! It's held in David's sizeable workshop, which is a real treasure trove of tools and woods. David is knowledgeable, clear and kind; he runs through a lengthy agenda of tasks (which we couldn't quite finish in time) through explanations, demonstrations and the all important participation. We learnt a lot - the drill section was especially information rich and helpful, with clear explanations about what symbols and other information on standard building materials (drills, screws, screwdrivers) actually mean - amazingly helpful. We really enjoyed the session.

I attention the workshop with my teenager daughter. David was very friendly and showed great interest in what people had bought with then and what they wanted to get out of the course. David is also very knowledgeable, takes the time to explain and demonstrate what he is doing (also if it isn't on your 'project'). I recommend the course to anybody who wants to try and do upholstery.

Enjoyable half day course not only making a garden planter but also learning good and valuable skills when working with wood and power tools. The teacher was very friendly and helpful - taking time with each member of the group and creating a good atmosphere. It’s a great intro class if you’re interested in the other classes available and making something useful for the garden. Highly recommend

Had a great session, David set a good tone/pace for the class. I think it was the minute things that we got shown that really stuck in my head and it has increased my confidence to doing things around the house. Overall, I had an enjoyable learning experience and hope to pop down for another few courses when practical.

This was a great workshop. All materials (except a small piece of fabric for the covering which was personal choice) were provided. Great tuition, lots of helpful tips and information about all aspects of diy in a friendly and professional setting Would do another course and would highly recommend.

Travelled via Waterloo - plenty of trains to west byfleet and Google told me it would be half an hour walk from west byfleet but it was more like a 15 minutes walk. So easy to get to

Great teacher, lots of information and enthusiastic. Felt very welcomed and comfortable.

I have been doing woodworking projects for some time but have knowledge gaps and I really appreciated all the attention to time and money saving details and theory.

Had a go at using power tools and also covered design which is often overlooked in courses. Been designing a desk and was completely stuck before doing this course, now I’ve planned it sourced materials and understand how to fix hinges (new skill)
