What you'll do
You will learn the essential tools and techniques for creating precise technical drawings, which are the most important communication tool between the designer, client, jeweller, and manufacturer. By having a precise drawing, we can ensure that the final piece matches the intended design and minimises the need for additional clarification or assistance. Not only that, but you will also be taught the importance of coming up with original ideas by getting inspiration from the elements around you. This workshop is an opportunity to learn and grow your skills in the field of jewellery.
What will I make?
You will create one drawing using various techniques to add colour and definition to your design. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student, there is something for everyone to learn and create.
- Beginner students will focus on basic technical drawing with a mechanical pen, learning how to describe shapes of metal, as well as cabochon and faceted gemstones and wrap-over, pavé, and claw setting.
- Intermediate students will have the opportunity to design a brooch, earring, ring or pendant. You can create compositions between gemstones with the metal design, applying fine black liner, and finish a full rendering using a brush pen.
- Advanced students will have the chance to refine their ideas for personal use or a company project by advancing their skills in design, drawing and rendering with watercolour.
What will happen on the day?
You will be introduced to Bibi, your instructor, and what you can get out of the course. This will be followed by a discussion of your skill level, experience and goal(s) for the workshop. Drawing equipment will be distributed before Bibi briefly demonstrates jewellery design sketching and colouring techniques.
Based on the demonstration, you will then apply methods for creating sketches and rendering designs for different materials such as silver and gold, and gemstones through hands-on practise.
You will practise one of the following: ring, bracelet, necklace, brooch or earrings. During the workshop, you can approach your instructor for individual consultation and feedback.
