Esme was brilliant - so patient and relaxed and the other ladies in the class were so friendly and supportive. I’m definitely keen to go back and do more classes now! Thank you.

Shazia Masood Jul 2024

Teacher was very good, friendly, easy to understand the instructions were giving. Material provided were excellent, whole class made cushions. Yes good value for money. I liked sewing with the machine and liked learning about how to attach fabric together.

Gemma Macdonald Jul 2024

Fantastic class, really well paced and it’s the perfect place to learn how to set up and use a sewing machine. I genuinely can’t believe how good my cushion turned out!

Textiles class review by Gemma Macdonald - Edinburgh

Caitlin Guibout Jul 2024

Fantastic! Kerry was a great teacher and the class was a fantastic introduction to using a sewing machine

Yola Jones Jul 2024

The class was wonderful, the instructor was really clear and patient, the class was really easy to follow and perfect for complete beginners. I would thoroughly recommend!

Nikki Sinclair Jul 2024

My 14 year old daughter really enjoyed the teen sewing class. She liked the teacher Ceri and has come away full of confidence to do more sewing - and with a really well made cushion!

Rachel Kerr Jul 2024

My daughter really enjoyed this class and is very proud of her cushion. She's already planning her next sewing project!

Elizabeth McCarroll Jun 2024

Thoroughly enjoyed the class. It was welcoming, informative and good fun! Very pleased with the cushion I made.

Very fun day! great pace for group learning, teacher and venue were excellent, great choice of materials and very good value for money

Natalia Panas Jun 2024

Amazing class! I left very satisfied and so has the rest of the class. Cerri was our teacher, she was very thorough with her instructions and gave everybody 1 on 1 teaching time. If anybody needed help she was there right away to explain what the issue was and how to fix it.

Becky Jun 2024

Such a good class! Cerri's a great teacher and it was easy to follow each step of the process, and I'm so happy with my new washbag!

Cerri was really lovey and I had a great time making my wash bag, which turned out really nice.

Katja Neumann Jun 2024

I've only ever done very basic hand-sewing before but was given a sewing machine some time ago. This class took the stress out of navigating this new tool and offered each step in the set up and control in very manageable chunks and with great support from Cerri. She made us all super welcome in the class and assured that we all came away with a beautiful cushion. I particularly loved Cerri's approach to her classroom: sewing is an art and a practice so you do you, it's your design - and of course mistakes will happen, so just be kind to yourself and take the opportunity to learn! Highly recommend!

Natalia Panas Jun 2024

All materials were prepared for the lesson when I arrived. I brought my own sewing machine with me to learn its quirks. Our teacher went through everything in detail and was there to help everybody every step of the way. Great teacher, I have signed up for the following intermediate class.

Alix Goret Jun 2024

Great teacher. It was easy to follow and to understand.
Now I have a nice cushion.
Thank you!

Catherine Baker Jun 2024

Brilliant course. You get expert advice tips and tricks to give you the skills and confidence you need to make your own garment. Great that everyone gets to choose too so not only do you get a garment you want, you can make it again at home and cement your knowledge. Also means you get to see other peoples’ work and learn from their projects too.
Emma was fantastic, so knowledgeable and friendly. The environment was relaxed and class size just right. Would recommend and will do another course after the summer to try a new challenge.

This was an excellent class, Esme was so helpful and friendly. It is a very relaxed atmosphere, and, as my daughter is sometimes anxious, this really helped. We came away with our completed washbags, and a lot more knowledge than before we went in.

Teacher's response

Thanks for your lovely review Margaret I'm so pleased you both enjoyed the class and had such a positive experience.

It's important to me that my workshops are accessible to everyone and while learning new skills the atmosphere is fun and friendly.

Irm Saddiq May 2024

I particularly enjoyed how the class was thought out. There were 6 attendees to one tutor which made it very easy to ask questions and learn as you go. Each step was easy to understand and the teacher was very knowledgeable. From not knowing how to sew with machine I managed to make a cushion. Excited for many other classes.

Teacher's response

Hi Irm, thanks for coming along to the workshop - so pleased you enjoyed the day! I hope you are eager to learn more - we have lots of intermediate sewing classes coming up if you wish to keep going whilst its still fresh!

thanks again and hope you love your new cushion!

The studio itself is very cosy and so colourful. The class is quite small which is a massive plus cause everyone can get one on one time. Esme the teacher was very lovely, explained everything in detail and was helpful when I was struggling. Could not believe how quickly I picked it up and ended up making a lovely pillow case. Would definitely be back for the more advanced class :)

Teacher's response

Great to have you along Paulina and so pleased that you enjoyed the class - if you wish to elevate your new found sewing skills the next clas for you would be the Intermediate sewing class!

We host this class on Saturdays and also run over 2 evenings - have a look and see if there's a date that works for you - we'd love to host you again in the sewing studio!

It really built on the skills I learnt in the first class and I plan to book on to more classes soon.

Thanks for your feedback Jude - really helpful to hear back from attendees and we are always looking to tweak and perfect how we teach, atmosphere and more so it's very useful to here back and definitely taking on board your suggestions.

Thanks also for returning! always lovely to host folks again and elevate sewing skills learned during the beginner's class. I hope you are really proud of your cushion and bag and feel that you could make more on your own at home.

Booked as a chance to spend some time for uninterrupted embroidery, as a follow up to the Botanics class.
I enjoyed having more time to spend on my project, and had learned my lesson about keeping it simple this time!
Enjoyed trying different stitch lengths and colours.
Lovely way to spend a few hours.

Teacher's response

Great course on learning how to use a sewing machine, from the basic steps to making a full cushion by the end. Teacher was very helpful and easy to follow also providing information on potential next steps.

Teacher's response

Many thanks for attending this workshop Philip! I hope you are brimming with confidence with your new sewing machine skills!

If you would like to attend another sewing class we also offer intermediate sewing classes and garment making.

Intermediate sewing is a great stepping stone that helps build more sewing confidence before starting to make clothing.

During the class you'll learn how to fit a zip, work with interfacing and line a bag.

do you hope you can join!

thanks again,

Michaella May 2024

A wonderful experience

The overall atmosphere was friendly, welcoming, and pretty chill. Our teacher, Esme, was very kind and patient (which I am so grateful for since I’m a bit slow and really bad at remembering instructions and thus kept repeating the same mistakes). I had a fun time learning the basics of a sewing machine and came out with a cute little pillow.

Thank you for the lesson

Teacher's response

Thanks fir attending this workshop and your cushion looks fab!

I'm glad you felt the class was well paced - we keep the class sizes small for exactly this reason - so it's good to hear you enjoyed the experience.

If you'd like to up-level your new found sewing skills please join one of our intermediate classes - very similar set up abd you'll get to make a gorgeous wee washbag which is lined and zip to close.

Thanks again for coming along!

Cathy Apr 2024

I did the Monday afternoon (12.30-5.30pm) class with Emma and made a simple A line skirt and a casual top. Emma was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 classes, in fact I can't wait to do another one. Emma was really good at explaining things and was always positive and encouraging. I highly recommend this class. I came away from the classes having learnt a lot and more confident than I was before.

Lovely and warm atmosphere to learn or refresh the basics and acquire some autonomy. I am now able to do but also recognise the stitches I would need to complete a project.
I left feeling confident, motivated and energized and carried on with my embrodery projects since.

Teacher's response

Lovely to see you again Aurelia! Can't wait to see your finished projects - you have alot of beautiful and creative ideas and it's great to be able to facilitate and help you learn more stitches and techniques for you to use in your creative projects!

All the best and thanks again for coming along!

Lots of inspiration from pictures and books.
Lovely to have a few hours to focus on creativity.

Teacher's response

Thanks for coming along Alison! Was such a lovely group of friendly folks - a lovely sewing Sunday - hope you'll continue with your project and I'd love to see photos!

This was such fun I booked an other embroidery class with them the following month.
Discovered Sashiko and I am now Obsessed. I loved how along with learning a technic the class was also the discovery of a specific esthetic, and it's history and struggles. This was really fulfilling and I have now a lot of projects flourishing in my head.

Morven Caie Apr 2024

The class was great, learned so many skills and there was enough time for the teacher to go around everyone and give them plenty of help. Looking forward to doing the garment making next

Teacher's response

Really great to hear you enjoyed this class Morven!

I hope you are able to come along to the garment making class as this will elevate your sewing skills even further!

You can make any garment you like and to match your sewing level - again class sizes are small - max. 6 folks which means you can learn at your own pace and get plenty tutor time too.

We've just listed a few new dates for the 6 week garment making course!

be lovely to have you along again in the sewing workshop!

Danny Wilson Apr 2024

Quiet weekend so thought I'd find something to do; have been sewing a while but normally with a machine and always liked the idea of visible mending so thought I'd give this a go. Session was very relaxed and picked up some really useful tips. Definitely a new skill set I'll be practicing more! The setup of the class allowed us all to do a sample pattern meaning I left feeling like I'd achieved something tangible but also got some great advice on a mending project I had wanted to do.

Sashiko Embroidery Class review by Danny Wilson - Edinburgh

Teacher's response

really lovely to have you along on the workshop Danny! I hope you've continued with patting your jeans - you'd made a great start!

thanks for booking on - lovely to meet you!

Patricia Nicholls Apr 2024

Ali was very welcoming and friendly. Nice balance between instruction, assistance and letting the group get on and sewcial. Enjoyed the session a lot and motivated to repair/embellish my clothes more than embroidery per se.

Teacher's response

It really was a sewcial class! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and was great to faciliate everyone's creativity whilst having such vibrant and interesting conversations! a brilliant Sunday!

Thanks for your review and being part of a fab Sunday sewing sesssion!

Cerri was a great teacher, so patient & full of knowledge.

Really pleased to hear you enjoyed this class Kelly - I love your bag and looks great photographed next to your tiles!

Thanks also for feedback - will get my thinking cap on! - watch this space!

Jordan-Louise Smith Apr 2024

Absolutely fantastic class, as expected. I had done the beginner's sewing class a few weeks prior and both classes have given me a huge amount of confidence and sense of pride when I left with my finished products. There was also a really good variety of fabric options provided so there is bound to be something to suit everyone's tastes.
Cerri taught me for both classes and she is brilliant! Very knowledgeable and attentive, and happy to answer any question, never making me feel like I was being daft (a definite plus for a complete novice like myself).
I have loved the classes so much that I have now bought my own sewing machine and have booked onto the garment making course later his month, which I am extremely excited for!

Luis Adamson Apr 2024

I really enjoyed the wash bag workshop, I learnt some new skills and left feeling inspired! Cerri is an experienced sewer and the atmosphere of the class was very supportive and relaxed, there was no pressure to be perfect or to rush anything :)

I really really enjoyed the class. It was so relaxed and friendly environment to learn in.

I wanted to do something and sewing is something I never tried so learning about it and trying was very Very fun and exciting to me.
I loved every bit of it and would like to do more.

Emma was very patient and a nice teacher.
All the materials were there so did not have to worry about bringing any also there was snacks and tea's all kind which was really thoughtful.
It's really worth it for the price.

You get to make a cushion cover at the end which kinda feels like your reward of the hard work.
Thank you soo much.

Teacher's response

Hi Amina

Thanks so much for coming along! Very pleased to hear you enjoyed the workshop and are keen to learn more too!

We look forward to welcoming you back in the studio anytime!

Please have a look on our website to see all upcoming classes and courses we offer.

Thanks again!

Jessica McClure Mar 2024

Couldn't recommend the class enough- excellent value for money! I've been wanting to improve my sewing skills and learn a bit of finesse for a while now and I 100% achieved that and more during the 6 weeks.

The class size was small enough that you weren't waiting for help from the teacher, but big enough that you could really benefit from learning some skills from your peers' projects, mistakes, ideas, etc. You definitely need to do some sewing at home between sessions to get everything done by the final class, but I expected that and finished just in time.

The teacher, Cerri, is extremely knowledgeable and was able to help, as well as give advice, in every aspect. She was also very encouraging and personable, which just made everything just that much more enjoyable!

I sewed a dress to wear to a family member's wedding and I can't WAIT to be able to tell people not only that I made it But that I made it with POCKETS

Teacher's response

Yes Jessica We love dresses with pockets Absolute winner!

Your dress looked amazing and so pleased to hear you enjoyed the course and hope you'll keep up the dressmaking!

Thanks for coming along!

Lucy Fraser Mar 2024

I would highly recommend this class to anyone looking to practice and improve their sewing and garment making skills.
Cerri was a fantastic teacher and her vast sewing knowledge and experience was evident throughout the six week class. She was extremely patient throughout the whole process and beyond helpful with all of my questions (no matter how silly). I was very happy with the outcome of my dress although I didn’t quite manage to get it finished I was very proud of what I did achieve in the time with my skill set. Definitely give it a go it’s a great environment with lovely people and a very wholesome activity to do as a group.

Susan Cole Mar 2024

Beth was so helpful and a great teacher. She was able to help me with all the quirks of my new machine (that I brought along to the class) and I now feel very confident threading it, changing the spool and using the different stitching options.

It was really fun making the cushion and it’s inspired me to take on more sewing projects. I’ll definitely be signing up for more classes in the future.

Teacher's response

Really pleased you enjoyed the workshop! Hope you've now got the confidence to use your sewing machine with confidence!

Thanks for the feedback!

I am so glad to have found this sewing class, since knowing where to start with sewing seemed like a daunting task! Esme was very insightful and patient in answering my questions and she taught a great class! The atmosphere was friendly and open, and i was glad to meet more people with an interest in learning to sew. I was so pleasantly surprised to find myself with a pillowcase of my own making in my hands at the end of the class, so i totally recommend this class to anyone wanting to gain confidence in sewing! ️ Thank you!

This was a really good and enjoyable day beginner’s class we had with Cerry. She was excellent - very clear, entertaining, encouraging and patient. My aim was to remind myself how to use a sewing machine having not done since school. This more than covered that and my family are very impressed with my cushion- nice achievement.I feel inspired and ready to have a go with my machine. I will likely join another class when I have practised. I would highly recommend.

Allison Conner Feb 2024

My friend and I did the beginner’s sewing class and so this was the next step. Our teacher Esme was lovely and patient and gave us clear instructions and answered any questions we had. All materials were provided and there was a lovely selection of fabric, coloured zips and threads to make our zipped wash/makeup bag. My friend and I loved the friendly atmosphere and chatting to the other people there doing the course, it was a nice small number of 6. Our bags turned out amazing as Esme taught us the importance of lining up seams etc, and to be as accurate as we could be. It all paid off as everyone was delighted with their results!

Teacher's response

Thanks Allison

Your feedback is very much appreciated - we definitely be working on instructions which folks can take home - great idea!

Your bag look fab! - I actually commented to Esme that yours was my favourite (although they all did look amazing!) and have since cut more of that fabric for the class as it really stood out and looked great! - don't worry because its such a big pattern each bag will still be very unique!

Thankyou to yourself and your friend for joining - if you feel ready why not join one of our garment making classes! Be great to have you along again at the sewing studio anytime!

Relaxed easy going class. Kerry is lovely, patient and knowledgable, made the class very enjoyable

Andrew Morton Feb 2024

Cerri was great. She took it right back to basics in how to navigate the machine in small easy bite size sections. She showed us how pulling, pushing and forcing just paper (with no thread) through affects the stitch which was really helpful to understand.

I dusted off my machine and brought it along as I thought it was not working properly, which prompted me to sign up to a class.

After leaving the first class. It has given me confidence to take up a pair of trousers and repair a bath towel.

I’m looking forward to coming along next week!

Teacher's response

Thankyou so much for coming along Andrew! - Such great feedback - I'm especially excited to hear the class has inspired you to mend and adjust a few items at home - really nice to hear this.

I hope you enjoyed week 2 and really hope you'll be back for more classes too!

The next step would be the intermediate sewing - we have one starting this week with Cerri (Thursday) and another at the end of March on a Saturday.

This is a good stepping stone from the beginners sewing class to further build up your sewing confidence before joining a garment making class!

We'd love to have you back in the sewing studio again!

Alice Feb 2024

Really great class. Perfect for people who are getting more skilled at sewing and want to learn how to improve their problem solving and understand how paper patterns and fit work together. Emma was a really good teacher, patient and approachable as well as knowledgeable. I would definitely come again with another item!

Paula Lee Feb 2024

Emma was enthusiastic, skilled and knowledgeable. She taught me how to do a breast enlargement which was quite complex. I also learned few tips on making trousers fit by watching Emma help the two other attendees. The room is well-laid out and provides adequate space to alter printed patterns.

Catriona Mary Crawford Feb 2024

Emma is a great teacher with enormous knowledge, patience and a lovely manner. I looked forward to the creativity and learning every week and really enjoyed the atmosphere in the class

Laurence Di Sotto Feb 2024

Joan McKenzie Feb 2024

I had a fabulous afternoon here. 2 people had registered for the class but I was the only participant so had undivided attention. I had taken along 4garments which no longer fitted comfortably. Gemma taught me how to adjust them and we completed 2of them I got lots of advice, hints and tips and was delighted with the afternoon. Would thoroughly recommend.
Not all that easy to find door into the building though and also not easy to find the correct room so allow a bit of extra time for that. Also wear something really warm!

Louise Vittery Jan 2024

An amazing afternoon learning Sashiko with a very knowledgeable teacher. Sitting there switching, chatting and chilling with tea, coffee and biscuits provided. The room was light and airy, all equipment provided. The only downside for myself was I couldn't find the place. I've never been to the venue before, didn't even know it existed. My satnav did keep saying turn left but there are no signs to indicate that the work base is there just states that it's Meadowbank House. No signs that I saw indicated St. Margaret's.

I loved this class, it was exactly what i wanted and expected. The teacher was kind, funny and patient - again, just what i was looking for. The venue is an old, rundown office block, a very cool, and quirky use for the space. The materials provided were excellent, everything you need and a lovely choice of fabric to make the cushion cover. The value for money was good, you pay for what you get and the level of experience of the teacher, and quality of materials and support were spot on. I loved learning to work my own sewing machine (after it spent years in a cupboard unused) and making a lovely simple cushion to take home.

Kirstie Jan 2024

Really great beginner class. Good pace and covered everything you would need to know to be able to have a go at home too. Cerri was an excellent teacher - very approachable, helpful and patient!

I hadn't sewn anything since school, 40+ years ago, when I was terrible and hated it. I wanted to see if I could overcome this, and make an item on a sewing machine.
The machines were good, and easy to understand. I'm not good at remembering visual things, but Beth, the tutor was patient and happy to show me things more than once when I forgot.
The other people in my class of six were really friendly and nice, and very supportive.
We all each made a lovely cushion cover, and were given a pad to fill it and take away.
I thought the class was great fun and excellent value for money. I might even consider buying a sewing machine if I saw one second hand.
The class wasn't that warm, but it was December, and it was snowing outside

If you're a beginner and are thinking of trying this class - just do it :-)

Ali was very patient, knowledgeable and really helpful. Really made the class run smoothly and was great at giving help when needed.

Megan McHaney Dec 2023

This was such a good class and excellent value for money. The teacher (Emma) was fantastic, and so gracious about sharing her stories/experiences of not getting everything right first time, and for giving us space to try, show options and go with the flow. I learned to read patterns, sew a zipper and put pockets in a dress, all new for me. As a cautious and timid sewer this class was amazing for giving me more confidence. As I was sick for one week during the class, I didn't quite finish my project, but I feel like I've got enough skills, knowledge and confidence to finish it and tackle the next one. Will definitely be looking out for future classes.

Jodie was an excellent teacher. She explained things well and was always on hand to help you. There were seven of us in the class which was a good size. There was some confusion at the beginning as three members of the class had been offered an alternative colour and the rest of us had not. Great experience! Super teacher, plenty of materials, enough time to complete the wreath. Very relaxing and enjoyable afternoon and lovely to have the finished wreath to take away. Good value for money if you consider the cost of shop bought wreaths. Main plus for me was being able to create a wreath using exactly the right colours to coordinate with the colour of my furnishings. Would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone regardless of creative ability as this is an achievable craft for all.

I’m definitely doing another one to keep improving my skills.

Emma was a calm and relaxed teacher.
always helpful and managed to get around the class well.
There was a week when we did not have a full class as the othere where on holiday and i must say it being four of us in the class was really nice.
i know this would not be cost effective! But maybe people could pay more for a smaler class? However it was great and we managed with six students also.
The email going out before the class was so imformative.

Had a great time with a friend at the Beginner’s class. Taught by Esme who was patient and attentive, we learned how to thread the sewing machine and then after some practise on paper and canvas, we went on to finish an actual cushion! Could not believe we learned so much in a day and left with a finished product. So satisfying. Thank you Esme!
The studio is a lovely cosy creative space. Material was provided but you could bring your own and there was tea, coffee and snacks provided. Class size was small so there was plenty opportunity for questions and most importantly, help. Good to chat to the others in the class too and find out what inspired them to learn.
Will definitely be going to the Intermediate class next after such a positive experience.

The teacher, Ally was very helpful and patient with us and took her time to explain the basics, as well as some of the more intricate parts of the course. We all had different patterns and material, so even if we weren't making the same garment we also benefited from hearing how to do it in the future.

There was enough time to make an outfit in the 6 weeks, with some extra work at home at times. I was very proud of what I had made and am already planning on making my next dress!

Esme was great. I basically went from knowing nothing to sewing my own cushion. The following day I used what I learnt to alter the waists on various pairs of jeans I own. I didn't think I would be able to do that as soon as I have, so I have Esme and the class to thank for that. I've already saved what I would have otherwise spent at the tailors by taking this class, so would absolutely recommend.

Sneha Pednekar Oct 2023

I had a great day learning how to use a sewing machine and putting together a pillow. The teacher was great and the other students were really friendly. I really recommend this to class to everyone :)

This was areally good session with Esme our tutor. I was at the learning to thread the bobbins stage and I definitely came away [with my cushion] feeling I would want to go further. The venue was great for me coming in on the 26 bus. I enjoyed the set-up in the room [with reservations about the chairs] The session was well paced, and without pressure and fun. With 5 people working it felt like a good atmosphere without too many people needing help. I really enjoyed the other sewers, it was a friendly helpful atmosphere. Yes I enjoyed it. Teacher's response

Hi Martine

I'm so pleased you enjoyed the class on Saturday - Esma has sent photos of everyone's cushions and they all look fab!

Apologies that you were uncomfortable during the class - I've not had that feedback regarding the chairs before - I will take it on board - I hope you were offered cushions etc. to make you more comfortable.

And I hope this didn't impact you too much throughout the day - I do appreciate your review.

Many thanks for attending and hope you continue with sewing!

all the best,

I adored this class! As a complete beginner (never touched a sewing machine in my life), I really felt like I got a lot out of this course. Beth was a wonderful teacher and was very instructive/patient with my level. I also feel like the fabric provided was appropriate for first time sewers like myself!

Izabela Kathiravel Sep 2023

Absolutely amazing class. Very informative, Beth was attentive and helpful. That’s exactly what I needed to boost my confidence!

Long sessions which provided lots of time to work on projects. Helpful, friendly and experienced teacher Step by step guidance feel alot more confident in using patterns.
Thank you

Claudia Willunat Sep 2023

It was a great course, the teacher had great tips on how to make dressing making or in my case a quilted Giles much easer and user friendly. This was my first garment I made from a pattern. She was really friendly and super helpful.
The venue was good, easy to park as I had to drive 45 minutes to the venue. I am looking forward to the next course.

I highly recommend the 6-week dressmaking class. I learnt a lot in a short space of time and I’m a much more confident at sewing with a machine and reading patterns. Emma, our teacher was fantastic - a huge thank you to her! I’m looking forward to tackling my next sewing project!

Esme is a good teacher. Lots of insider tips, patient and supportive. Lovely that the class is small so lots of opportunities to ask questions and get help. My cushion has pride of place in the sofa already!

My daughter and I had a great day learning how to make a wash bag and feel really proud of ourselves! Esme is a very calm, patient and friendly teacher who explains the steps really clearly. The location is good and the room feels a very creative place to be. The range of patterns and colours given is wide meaning you create something that feels yours. We were so inspired we went to a fabric shop immediately and have started making more at home with our new skills.

Enjoyed the class and learned a lot about Sashiko beyond just the stitching. The symbolism and history was a great touch. Appreciated the preprinted patterns, but that felt more robotic and the cloth wasn't pleasant to touch. Perhaps starting off, we could have used a stencil and made our own white marks to practice stitch length. That would have felt more engaging at the beginning. Loved he flexibility to work on our own design.

Although the venue is not the easiest place to find, the instructions with the class details were very clear and helpful. The class space is lovely and inspiring and the teacher very helpful, encouraging and knowledgeable

Lovely afternoon led by Ali , learning about the history of sashiko, and giving it a go.

Liz Sep 2023

Had a brilliant afternoon, learning about Sashiko and quietly practising the stitches. Everything was explained thoroughly and the whole atmosphere was very relaxing and friendly. It was inspiring to be within the artist studio, surrounded by various textiles projects. There was plenty of opportunity to talk to the other participants, whilst we were stitching and that was a very welcome and enjoyable aspect of the course. The four hours flew by and now I’m looking forward to developing my skills and understanding at home. This course was really super value for money, considering the expertise of the teacher and the fact that everything was provided for us!

Well, I had the most fantastic class I could have ever imagined with Esme. Esme was truly golden and an incredible, warm, patient, kind and thoroughly knowledgeable teacher. Esme explained things so concisely and gave so many handy and useful tips and I am blown away with how much I learnt in such a short space of time. I can't believe I made a whole cushion cover!
Would return to a class by Esme in a heartbeat. What a wonderful person and teacher!

Beth was a wonderful teacher and so patient and knowledgeable. I enjoyed learning and brought my own machine and Beth came over to show me how it worked. I enjoyed the process and the cushion was excellent. I enjoyed having a finished product at the end.

Great course. Very informative, everything shown and described very clearly. Looking forward to moving into the next class.

Rachel Aug 2023

Brilliant course with lovely teacher. The machines look quite intimidating at first with all the different settings and wheels and levers, but by end of course we were all happily winding bobbins and re-setting the machines up with no bother! Love my little cushion also :) excited to try the intermediate course!

very good class and very good and friendly teacher, I'm excited for the second class

Allan Pilcher Aug 2023

I'm so glad I took this class, Beth was a very good tutor, she broke down the task into smaller easy to master chunks.

I found the venue to be a bit of a rabbit warren, but the directions in the welcome email are very good.

I hadn't touched a sewing machine before the class, and left with a cushion I had made, and feeling confident enough to use a sewing machine to make small repairs/projects.

I would recommend this class to anyone thinking of learning how to use a sewing machine.

I plan on taking the intermediate class once I've got used to some of the different stitches.

Helen Richee Aug 2023

Esme, our teacher, led a very informative class - taught course the basics of threading bobbin and machine and practised stitching in a straight and then curved line - initially on paper and then on fabric. Enjoyed the whole relaxed experience.

Liz Cornall Aug 2023

Esme was a fantastic teacher, really knowledgable about dressmaking fabrics etc with a great sense of humour. It was really lovely having a real life human being helping me rather than Youtube!
St Margrets house is easy to access by car with a dedciated car park and on several bus routes so easy to access.
I really enjoyed having some company while sewing and made my disasters (like making two right sleeves!) a bit of a laugh rather than a give-up moment. Esme was also fantastic at helping me fix mistakes and showing me the best ways to work with my fabrics.
Although at first glance the course seems a little expensive its great value for money as the classes are small (there was only 5 in mine!) and the teacher is able to give everyone lots of one on one time to help them through their projects.

I would thoroughly reccommend to anyone looking to boost their confidence in dress making!

Charlie Mills Jul 2023

I really enjoyed this beginner class, led by Esme. The group was a nice size - we were 5, but I think the max is 6. The 5 hours felt relaxed but went by quickly. We learnt how to set up the sewing machine and had an opportunity to practise and experiment with different stitches. After a lunch break we made a simple pillowcase - there was a nice selection of pre-cut fabric to choose from. We learnt by watching Esme’s demonstration. I think everyone was proud of their finished products! I would recommend this course - it’s great to get hands on help and to learn alongside others: something online videos can’t give you!

Really enjoyed the class. Esme kept the perfect pace throughout, and made the experience very enjoyable. Will definitely book another class with her.

Brigid Murphy Jul 2023

Our teacher Emma was excellent. She gave use lots of useful tips. She made sure everyone was included and kept an eye on us all. Everyone seemed to get a lot out of the classes and accomplished the tasks they wanted to.
I think the venue needs modernising. The room we were in was small and the college seemed run down and scruffy especially the lifts.
I’ve given 4 * not 5* due to the state of the venue.
I think the course was value for money.

Vanessa Meikle Jul 2023

I enjoyed the classes very much. I was immediately impressed by Emma's wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise. I learned a lot from watching her and listening. She was cheerful, calm, patient and encouraging. She enabled each person in the class to go at their own pace and got the balance just right between helping them when they asked for help, and giving them space to work things out for themselves. The atmosphere was positive and the soft music in the background was lovely.
I learnt new skills and learnt about myself also.
I would highly recommend these classes.

Yueyue Jul 2023

The teacher was very knowledgeable and helpful. The whole lesson was well structured and ran in a relaxed atmosphere. The materials provided were beautiful and easy to use, even for beginners. Great class. Esme the tutor was really good, sensitive to the different needs of the class and went at a good pace. She kept a close eye on what we were doing without being overbearing. Lovely choice of materials. I would definitely recommend the class.

Monique Lockhart Jul 2023

I really enjoyed attending this course. As someone who can sew but had lost confidence in making items for myself, I really gained a lot from the six weeks. It was nice to share tips with the other attendees, who were of different levels of expertise, and different ages. Everyone was friendly and chatted in between the working. Esme the teacher was lovely, a quiet but reassuring presence always willing to help and share her experience. There were plenty of machines and all the extra items you needed provided. I am delighted by finished dress and will definitely carry on making things for myself. Would recommend for both beginners and experienced sewers.
