2 x 7 hours Class size 1 to 6     label £200

Join talented local musician and instrument maker Brian for a two-day craft workshop where you will learn all about the art of woodworking.

Everyone can join in on the fun of making your own stringed instruments, whether you're a complete novice or you have a little experience working on some wood projects. You'll be supported through the process from start to finish with plenty of expert demonstrations, advice and tips from Brian.

You'll get to decide whether you want to craft an Appalachian dulcimer (a three or four-stringed folk instrument) or a cigar box guitar (a homemade, simple version of a guitar). Both instruments are easy enough for you to craft and super fun to play!

Guided by Brian, you will learn how to:

  • Design and make the soundbox by modelling plywood and a neck from locally grown hardwood.
  • String the neck
  • Create sound holes and decorations using coping saws, craft knives and files.

Once you've finished crafting your dulcimer or cigar box guitar, you'll spend the rest of the course gathering around a campfire, learning how to play your handmade instrument with your fellow creatives. It's the perfect gift experience for the music lover or DIY fan in your life!
