Cooking and my interest in food are literally my life! I've been cooking for 25 years professionally. I cook at Harborne Food School. I'm also the proprietor of my own food business and former Tour Chef to Wiz Khalifa, ASAP Rocky, Chevvy Woods, Rozi Plain, Bloc Party and Paramore.

As well as cooking for music tours, I have won plenty of culinary awards, including silver medalist at the World Culinary Olympics 2017 representing England in the Indian category and also achieved 3rd place in the prestigious UK Curry Championships 2023. As a Foodie, I've travelled to over 60 countries and lived in Malaysia, China and Spain and have gathered a wide repertoire of dishes that I would love to share with you.

Apart from a few accolades already mentioned, I feel a great passion for food history, origins of ingredients, and regional staples not only across Asia, but the world over. I love to cook and share my knowledge, and often learn a lot from my students too.

We had a great experience at this course today.

Steve was brilliant, answered all of our many questions, made the day interactive and taught us so much in the 3 hours.

On reflection, the great thing about this is that it is done in his house, which did initially feel strange, but it was perfect because it showed us that you can make 5/6 Baltis, a Dahl and a Lassi all in a small home kitchen.

There was no special pots/pans, everything we used today is pretty much what you'd find in any kitchen.

His knowledge of the history of the dishes was great, giving us a thorough explanation of why they are called what they're called.

We have now mastered how to make a Balti (we made 5 different varieties), a Dahl, a bread, poppadoms and the accompanying dips, and would feel confident in making these for a dinner at home.

A word of advice is to take quite a few tupperware containers as you'll want to take away everything that you've cooked.

A great afternoon spent learning and doing and sold recommend to both novice and advanced cookers.

My husband purchased the Beginners Indian Cookery class for my birthday. My son joined me on the course. Both of us are competent cooks, but identified that we struggled with Indian cuisine, especially getting the spice selection correct for sauces, bhajis etc. There is a maximum of 2 participants to each class, so I was looking forward to personal attention. My first impression on entering the kitchen was how cold it was, the windows in the kitchen were wide open, and half way through the class, when we were starting to cook, the teacher opened the patio doors – ‘freezing’ The teacher had prepared a number of ingredients for us - chopped onions for each dish, potatoes peeled and chopped ready to cook the Saag Aloo and the chicken was ready for the chicken curry. I found the pace of the lesson, especially at the beginning, very slow. The class started at 10.00am and the first two hours were taken-up with the teacher demonstrating how to flavour and cook the potatoes ready for the Saag Aloo, demonstrating how to make the Raita and how to cook the pilau rice. By 12.00 noon we still had not done any cooking! I felt that the class was disorganised and lacked structure. Both the domestic kitchen and the teacher's commercial kitchen were very small. The area given to prepare food was also very small and was shared by both the teacher and the two of us. Cooking in the commercial kitchen was tight for 3 people. I felt that this class would have been much more suitable to one participant. due to both the space and cooking facilities and the equipment provided. At 12.00 noon the teacher suggested we were on time, but it was obvious this class was going to run well over time. There is no doubt that the teacher’s knowledge on Indian cuisine is extensive. Despite the class being disorganised, I still feel I learnt a lot, the teachers hints and tips were extremely useful and the quality and quantity of the food produced was very good. I feel confident to try these dishes at home. I have read all the reviews on ClassBento which have scored this class at 5 stars, and so I just wonder if we have caught the teacher on an ‘off day’

Teacher's response

I’m surprised and saddened by your review. However, I’m pleased you mentioned the class objectives were met. I wish you had told me about being cold during the class; a simple adjustment could have been instantly made. All my classes are well-organized and flexible. As this is a ‘beginner’s class’, most people appreciate an introduction to the ingredients, dishes and cooking techniques. I accommodated your request for additional dishes, although it extended the time. Wish you both all the best & happy cooking

I booked this a week in advance for my husbands birthday. The communication initially with Steve was amazing and a time and date was quickly agreed.
The class was held at Steve's house with made it all the more authentic and cosy. Steve put us both at ease and was super friendly.
Everything we needed was provided but don't forget your tupperware as there is lots of food to take home! We have just finished eating our dinner, we are stuffed and it was absolutely delicious!
We both really enjoyed our day with Steve, not once did we feel rushed or pressured. It was amazing value for money.
Book it, you won't be disappointed!

Very knowledgeable teacher who has travelled so knows a lot about the spices etc. made very tasty food and went into detail about the food and its origin. I believe its good value for money as you are taking home several dishes you make and the knowledge to make your own curry dishes.

This cooking course was a gift for my husband’s birthday, as he’s passionate about cooking. Steve made us feel very welcome into his home and he had a great set up for cooking. All the ingredients provided were fresh and of quality. We learnt lots of tips and tricks to get the best out of your curries and how we can alter them to make many more dishes at home. We also learnt about all the different spices you can use in your cooking too. We felt we got our money’s worth with a great authentic 1:2 experience that you may not get at bigger cooking schools. We loved the passion shown by Steve and overall my husband really enjoyed it and got to take a goody bag of treats home, which topped the day off!

Having never done one of these classes before, we weren’t sure what to expect, but Steve put us at ease straightaway and made us feel welcome in his house. He’d also done a lot of the preparatory work, which left us to concentrate on the cooking itself.
Steve had chosen a well balanced menu of dishes for us to prepare, and we worked through them all in the time available without ever feeling hurried.
He is clearly passionate and very knowledgeable about his subject, and was full of interesting tips as well as clear guidance on what we should be doing. At the end of the lesson we had produced a brilliant looking (and tasting) meal that we could be proud of.
Thanks again Steve!

I bought this cookery class for my teenage daughter, as she loves cooking and baking.

She took the Indian beginners class with Steve, making a chicken curry, saag aloo, onion bhaji and chapatti bread.

She had a great time and can't wait to use her new experience in the kitchen at home.

Steve was very knowledgeable and shared his expirances of his travels, to which was put into practice during this class.

Would recommend to anyone, including youngsters!

Thanks again!

We went as a couple for an early birthday present.

Steve was brilliant - he’s the perfect teacher / person for this kind of thing.

We felt very welcome & enjoyed every minute.

Steve had all the gear & provided everything we needed. It really was a brilliant experience.

I’d highly recommend it for other couples.

Steve’s knowledge was second to none.

We made bhaji’s (which were a babe Chander) a roti, perfect rice & a chicken curry.

10/10 - really brilliant.

Really enjoyed the 3 hrs. Very informative and you see very quickly how passionate Steve is about Indian cooking. I will definitely be cooking my own curries here on in!

Steve was very knowledgeable about everything, from spices, culture and region.
I really enjoyed my time with Steve and would recommend him.
The food we cooked was delicious and I gained a greater knowledge of cooking Anglo/Indian food.

This was the best experience ever Loved every minute of it. Steve was so lovey to me and my friend and taught us a lot about the backgrounds of cooking and the dishes we was doing today. My friend and I are chefs/baker but I booked this class to learn something new and I can happily say I will be using the dishes I learnt about today to make more at home. Will definitely come back as a customer again and try other classes that Steve teaches. Thank you

Had a fantastic session with Steve's 'Gym Meal Prep Cooking Class'. I learnt a lot from this cooking lesson, he is a master of his craft and the man is full of knowledge. He explains a lot from start to finish and very thorough in his approach to teaching. The venue was a little challenging to find but I eventually found it with his guidance. At the end of the lesson I came out with 4 different dishes that will definitely help me with food preparation to help me with my training regime. I will definitely book Steve for more cooking session as there's so much to learn which I felt I've only scratch the surface.

We were bought this experience as an anniversary gift so had absolutely no idea what to expect. We were therefore surprised to arrive at a private house.
Steve made us feel at ease immediately and we enjoyed a few hours of preparing and cooking the food on a one to one basis.
Steve was very passionate about, in this case, Anglo/Indian food and he was ready to answer all our questions.

Excellent teacher, made the whole experience interesting and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys curry.

Steve has been an amazing tutor. He taught me how to prepare various Indian dishes and provided me with valuable cooking tips. The highlight of his teaching was his ability to restore my confidence in making roti, which I found challenging until now. Steve provides clear, step-by-step cooking instructions that boost your confidence in preparing foreign dishes.

Great class, welcoming learning environment and easy to follow delicious recipes.

Steve was kind to answer all questions and made it a lovely afternoon.

Would recommend.

Steve was very welcoming, knowledgeable and has a treasure trove of ingredients. The lesson was well prepared and we cooked alongside eachother in a great commercial-looking special kitchen area. I really enjoyed learning the foundations of vegetarian dishes - then how to modify them to create many tasty varieties. Puffing up rotis was particularly good fun, and I've ordered my wire roaster to replicate at home. Would definitely recommend.
