In Dan's words

I live in sunny Sunderland, on the North East coast of England, with my partner and 12-year-old son. When I'm not at work, I'm most likely hunting down a good speciality coffee, losing myself in my record collection, or convincing myself I'm about to get good at the piano.

About me

I got into SEO almost by accident and now spend way longer thinking about search engines and AI than I ever thought I would!
I've only ever won one thing in my life: a Guitar Hero competition when I was a student.
I recently built a Walkman fully out of spare parts – and surprisingly, it works!

Top weekend activities

Walks along the coast at Whitburn or Roker, trying to spot unusual birds or sea life – I swear I saw an orca just the other day!
Lazy Sunday mornings with coffee – maybe with more steps than necessary, but I enjoy the whole process, from grinding the beans to tasting the final product (or even better, watching someone else enjoy it!).
Taking time when I can to sit with my record player and some good headphones, and just enjoy an album from start to finish – it's a lovely way to appreciate something that I'm already familiar with.

Favourite craft

I've been starting to get into oil painting recently – inspired by Bob Ross, naturally! Nothing good enough to share yet, but I really enjoy the tactile process after having not painted anything since my art A-Level.

3 top tips to recharge and unwind

Talk to strangers, even if it's just a smile and a hello. Probably just part of getting older, but it's always a huge boost to my day.
Don't try to optimise your downtime. Give yourself permission to just do what makes you happy.
Embrace being bored. I actually feel like this is really hard now compared to when I was younger, but some of my best ideas have come from moments that weren't filled with anything else.

3 top tips for embracing creativity

Engage with something physical. Whether that's picking up a paintbrush for the first time since school, pulling a paperback off the shelf or dusting off your old CD collection, I find it's the best antidote to an increasingly digital world.
Try to read something every day, it doesn't matter what it is. You never know when something might inspire you in an unexpected way!
Follow any creative whims that you have, even if that means you have a load of different hobbies or projects at once. That way you're avoiding getting too burned out on something you love, and won't be too disappointed if something doesn't go as planned.
