Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum; the method is similar to the maki-e technique.
As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, embracing the flawed or imperfect. Kintsugi can relate to the Japanese philosophy of mushin (無心, "no mind"), which encompasses the concepts of non-attachment, acceptance of change, and fate as aspects of human life.
Raku translates to the word "enjoyment". Enjoy the process of repairing! Rakugi (Raku-Kintsugi) will be one way you can make sure not only you have a unique ceramic piece but one of a kind in the world through this process after kintsugi it back together again.
Immerse yourself in a beautiful Japanese method with this kintsugi class in London.
Clay, aprons, and tools will be provided during the class, including a selection of pots to choose your favourite from. There will be other ceramics made by potters in the studio that you can choose to upgrade for an additional fee.
At the end of the class, you will be able to bring your selected piece home.
