What you'll do
Immerse yourself in the ancient craft of weaving at this three-hour introductory workshop with Art Hub Studios. Discover the backstrap loom and pick up some top weaving tips!
The backstrap loom has a rich history as it's one of the oldest weaving tools out there! This beautiful piece of craft equipment allows the weaver to play an integral role in the weaving process. This weaving workshop allows you to connect with history and make something amazing by hand!
Uncover exciting new avenues for your weaving journey to take with an array of creative expressions for you to explore. Your friendly teacher will guide you through this beginner-friendly class and support you as you learn to weave on a backstrap loom.
You'll have the opportunity to create your own unique woven piece while experimenting with diverse techniques such as extra weft and pile weaving.
During this weaving course, you will:
- Learn weaving terminology and some beginner-friendly basics to the craft.
- Design your own woven sample.
- Pick up weaving skills whilst using a backstrap.
- Add finishing touches to your sample.
Please note:
- Alternative options can be arranged for those who require a chair.
- Participants must be over the age of 18.
- This course requires a minimum number of participants to run. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, we unfortunately have to cancel. We will notify you 7 days before the start date and you will receive a full refund or we can transfer over to another date.

Sara Kelly
Sara is a weaver and designer who has a passion for traditional craftsmanship, sustainable materials and conservation. She currently works from her studio at Art Hub Deptford on public, private and personal commissions and teaches both tapestry and backstrap weaving workshops across London.
Your host
Art Hub Studios CIC is a non-profit Community Interest Company. We’ve been based in South East London for over 20 years and are dedicated to supporting artists at all stages of their career. Through our studios, facilities, gallery and outreach programme our aim is to promote the positive impact of art on children, in education and wellbeing in adulthood.
Art Hub Studios was founded in 1999 by Deb and Adrian as a framing business based in what is now Fuel Tank on Creekside, Deptford. Running the studios and framing in parallel is what began our studios and facilities offering. Over the years we have evolved as an organisation in order to meet new challenges from the development of the local area and changes in artist needs. In 2014 we became a Community Interest Company with affordable, all-inclusive studios at the centre of what we do. We now house 290 artists across two sites in Deptford and Woolwich.
We also deliver a programme of art workshops to young people based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in partnership with Charlton Athletic Community Trust as part of the Young Greenwich Programme.
