2 x 6 hours Class size 1 to 6     label £175

Embark on an immersive two-day etching workshop in London with Art Hub Studios to inspire your mind with new printmaking techniques.

This hands-on and intensive craft course is designed to introduce you to the essential aspects of the craft, providing you with the necessary skills to incorporate the techniques you learn into your own artistic endeavours.

Etching is a time-honoured printmaking method that involves engraving lines or marks into a metal plate's surface using an acid, known as mordant. This technique originated in the sixteenth century and has been extensively evolved ever since, allowing for a variety of both gestural and controlled marks.

To kick off day one of this workshop, you will focus on hard and soft grounds, allowing you to experiment with generating either precise, clear lines or softer, textured imprints. The second day delves into how different tones can be achieved through aquatints.

In this etching and printing course, you will:

  • Prepare plates including filing edges, degreasing, polishing, and applying ground.
  • Learn soft and hard ground etching for creating linear or textural marks.
  • Discover how to achieve tones through etching with aquatint.
  • Prepare paper for printing.
  • Learn to safely use oil-based inks and the etching press.
  • Finish your prints and sign an edition.

Please note:
  • Participants must be over the age of 18.
  • This course requires a minimum number of participants to run. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, we unfortunately have to cancel. We will notify you seven days before the start date and you will receive a full refund or we can transfer over to another date.
  • The studio is a low-toxicity environment.

Art Hub Studios CIC is a non-profit Community Interest Company. We’ve been based in South East London for over 20 years and are dedicated to supporting artists at all stages of their career. Through our studios, facilities, gallery and outreach programme our aim is to promote the positive impact of art on children, in education and wellbeing in adulthood.

Art Hub Studios was founded in 1999 by Deb and Adrian as a framing business based in what is now Fuel Tank on Creekside, Deptford. Running the studios and framing in parallel is what began our studios and facilities offering. Over the years we have evolved as an organisation in order to meet new challenges from the development of the local area and changes in artist needs. In 2014 we became a Community Interest Company with affordable, all-inclusive studios at the centre of what we do. We now house 290 artists across two sites in Deptford and Woolwich.

We also deliver a programme of art workshops to young people based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in partnership with Charlton Athletic Community Trust as part of the Young Greenwich Programme.
