What you'll do

Travel to the streets of Tokyo without even leaving the country with this delicious Leeds activity that will introduce you to Japanese culture and food. Pick up some new recipes and sharpen your cooking skills while you're here.

A friendly teacher from Leeds Cookery School will help you whip up some typical izakaya dishes. Izakaya is a casual Japanese bar which serves small plates of food to be enjoyed with an alcoholic beverage, usually an ice-cold Japanese beer!

In this Japanese cooking class, you will learn how to:

Marinade and thread yakitori.
Pane a pork cutlet.
Make your own Japanese curry spice blend.
Make sticky rice.
Make an authentic tempura batter.
You'll also pick up some hints and tips on how to deep fry.

All the recipes and methods you will learn in the workshop can be recreated at home. Add them to your repertoire so you can keep cooking these incredible treats time and time again.

On the menu:

Chicken yakitori
Pork tonkatsu
Vegetable tempura (chef demonstration)

You will have a go at making two of these dishes and watch your teacher make a third. The tasty meal you make can then go home with you, but in the class, you can sample your teacher's version of each dish.

Please note:
This class uses induction hobs. If you have a pacemaker fitted you will need to email the teacher so the class can be adapted.

Across our range of classes, courses and events at Leeds Cookery School our teachers promote and talk about seasonal ingredients, local sourcing and the importance of eating ethically and sustainably. Our ingredients are sourced from Yorkshire and are sustainable wherever possible and we always use free-range eggs. We order small quantities to minimise wastage and always consider the food miles travelled by our ingredients.

As well as donating profits to Zest, Leeds Cookery School has committed to running affordable cooking activities throughout the year, in partnership with Jamie’s Ministry of Food Leeds and Zest’s Community Development Team. These sessions enable low-income families and vulnerable people to access basic cookery skills and cookery clubs that address social isolation.

The teacher was really passionate about cooking and that really helps when you're learning something! He really made everyone feel included and got us all stuck in. The venue was perfect for our group size and had great equipment for everything in the class. Good quality ingredients as well and obviously tasted great at the end of it!

It was nice to be able to eat at the end of the class and have a chat. Learn how to make tempura batter and how to make a Japanese curry sauce from scratch (I'm used to using just the blocks you can buy from an Asian supermarket and stir into some water).

The teacher Scott and staff were exceptional! Very professional but friendly and encouraging.
Venue very accessible for all.
Ingredients were all provided and Scott taught us to make Japanese Gyozas, katsu curry with breaded pork, sticky rice and tempura veg! Amazing Food tasted superb and we all sat to eat together with a beer or lemonade.
We will return and recommend it highly!
