What you'll do

There is so much to learn about the overlocker! It can do so much more than just neaten up your seams. In this sewing class, you will learn loads of handy tips and tricks to using an overlocker, also known as a serger.

If you have recently purchased an overlocker, or are thinking of purchasing one, then this workshop is the one for you! We welcome all skill levels, so you don't need to know many sewing techniques already.

Craig, your friendly teacher, will unlock the secrets of this sewing machine and open you up to all the different kinds of sewing you can achieve with your overlocker, as well as replacing parts and machine maintenance.

During this two hour workshop your tutor will cover everything you need to know to become confident with your machine. Including:

Blades - upkeep and changing.
Needles - types and changing.
Accessories - feet / tweezers / cone holders.
Threads to use.
Threading your overlocker.
Changing thread colour without a total rethread.
Tension.
Differential feed.
Cutting width selection.
Four thread or three thread sewing options.
Creating a rolled hem - removing the finger plate.
Flatlock seam.
Sewing a blind hem.
Sewing in elastic.
Gathering foot - one layer and two layers of fabric.
Cleaning and oiling - machine maintenance.

Please note:

We will be teaching the workshop on Brother 1034D / 3034D / 2104D overlocker machines. Each model is basically the same, with a few minor differences which will be explained in your workshop.
We can only teach this group workshop on Brother overlockers, as we will be using specialised feet, specifically for brothers. You can then transfer this information, to your own brands of overlockers you may have at home.

Your safety is important to us!

On entering, we will have sanitiser stations for you to to freshen up. All machinery, sewing stations, and tools you will be using, will be sanitised before you arrive, and between each session.
At your sewing station you will also have sanitiser wipes, should you feel you need to use them.
Our lavatories are communal, but they will be supplied with santiser wipes, hand wash and disposable towels.

Face masks:
We will continue to follow the government guidelines on facial masks. If you are exempt please bring along your exemption badge.

Who we are:

The Fashion Box was founded in 2013.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins, with a post-graduate degree in Advanced Innovative Pattern Cutting, Craig (Mr Fashion Box!) embarked on a kaleidoscope of successful ventures within the fashion industry.

Craig is a qualified university lecturer, graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, with a Distinction in Academic Practice, teaching certificate.

During his time working in the fashion industry, he has worked alongside a huge selection of fashion houses, new designers and is a mentor to many university lecturers and fashion graduates.
He is also a former Collection Manager for Qasimi Homme, has worked alongside Sadie Clayton, and is currently working on production of a collection of clothing patterns for his own brand.

Craig has more than 25 years experience in teaching in universities and colleges, as well as with private clients. As a result, he is accomplished at getting the best out of both groups of students and one-to-one situations.

After 8 years at prestigious private Italian school, Istituto Marangoni, he left to pursue his dreams of opening his own fashion school, which resulted in The Fashion Box.

Craig is also former Head of Fashion at a London University, and is currently writing university programmes for fashion schools and universities worldwide.

He is a very patient, capable mentor and tutor, both to beginners and more experienced students.
