Sustainable Sewing Course - Make or Upcycle Your Clothes

*Extended course!* Learn how to make or upcycle your own clothes in this sewing class in Edinburgh city centre.

5 x 2.5 hours Class size 2 to 5     label £165

Whether you want to add some unique touches to personalise a garment, or make a whole new piece that is uniquely yours, Jen will teach you the skills to bring new life to your wardrobe in a environmentally friendly way.

From the skills of dressmaking (which isn't just about making dresses!) you'll learn about reading patterns, choosing sustainable fabrics and how to put your garment together. Or maybe you want to repair and rework that pile of clothes you've been meaning to do something with but haven't quite got around to!

Each course will depend on what you and others in the group bring to work on. This class is a friendly, relaxed environment in which you'll learn how to carry out your own project while also picking up hints and tricks from what others are working on.

You'll gain essential sewing knowledge and practical tips to build your confidence in sewing and using patterns along with general upcycling ideas.

Please note: This venue is accessed by stairs and has no lift.

Add-on available for this class
  • Sewing machine induction (+30 mins before class) (£5)
You can add these when you book (optional).

Suitable for complete beginners and those returning to sewing who need a refresher.
If you've never used a sewing machine before or would like a refresher, please add the option to arrive 30 minutes before the first class for an introduction to using the machines!
What you'll get
  • A selection of patterns to choose from, or you may wish to bring your own.
  • Paper and tools for copying out patterns.
  • Use of the studio's sewing machines & overlockers
  • Use of equiptment and a selection of habedashery to carry out your projects.
  • A selection of materials helpful for repairing and upcycling garments.
What to bring
In week 1 it would be great to bring:
  • If you have an idea of a garment you would like to make, bring a pattern for this but I will also have a big selection of patterns to choose from!
  • If you already have a fabric in mind for making a garment, you can also bring this along (make sure to pre-wash it first)! However we also will chat through what fabrics may be good to use in week 1.
  • If you would like to do all upcycling / restyling for the course, or a mix of both, bring a garment to upcycle for week 1!
