What you'll do

If you've always wanted to get hands-on with mosaic making and craft your own beautiful mosaic art, now's your chance with this all-day creative workshop in Edinburgh!

In this class, you'll piece together all of the skills you need to start creating mosaic masterpieces from scratch as you bring a stunning mosaic plaque to life.

Your workshop will kick off with a short overview of the various methods, approaches and possibilities of mosaic making. You'll focus on the techniques of the art, covering the best mosaic materials, proper cutting, adhesives and grouting.

Once you've developed your skills, it'll be time to work on your mosaic, either using your own design or choosing from a selection of pre-prepared templates. It doesn't matter if it's your first attempt, as your teacher will be on hand to dispense plenty of tips and tricks as you focus on unleashing your inner creativity.

At the end of the class, you'll watch a grouting demonstration as your piece finishes drying, ready to head home with a small bag of grout and instructions to finish your piece.

Helen Miles trained in the art of mosaic making with master craftspeople in Greece, which taught using traditional methods with a focus on Byzantine iconography. She later became interested in Roman mosaics and now makes contemporary pieces for interior and exterior spaces.

Born in Glasgow, Helen worked in America and the Middle East before moving to Thessaloniki in Greece in 2003, a UNESCO city famous for its concentration of Byzantine churches. It was while living there that she began to study mosaics which later led to a full-time profession as a mosaic artist.

Helen is now based at Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios in Edinburgh. Initially, she specialised in using Greek stone and marble but is currently exploring the use of alternative materials including unglazed porcelain, Scottish stone and shells. Her aim is to preserve the simplicity and directness of early mosaics while producing works that suit the way we live now.
