In this weekend workshop, Angela Steel will introduce you to the art of traditional stained glass where you’ll create a stained glass panel to hang in your window. Learn to cut, paint, lead, and solder glass with confidence as you design and create your own unique panel. This hands-on workshop covers fundamental glass painting and leading techniques, guiding you from concept to completion.
One day 1, Angela will guide you to design your piece, cut glass, and paint your designs onto the glass. Choose your own motif to work from, it can be anything that inspires you … a favourite flower, tree, animal or even an autumn/Halloween/Christmas scene/motif that you can hang in your window each year. Don’t worry if you don’t think you’re artistic, as Angela will have lots of designs for you to choose from, and you’ll be able to trace your chosen design using a light pad. Or you can draw your own design.
Your pieces will be kiln-fired overnight, and on day 2, you’ll lead and solder your pieces. Please note that, on day 2, you'll be finished by about 3pm.
The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to traditional stained glass, you’re very welcome.
It’s a relaxed atmosphere where, not only will you develop or hone your stained glass skills, but you’ll also have an enjoyable day out! This is also a great workshop for team building and private parties – if you’d like to book for a private event, contact us.
Please note: In case of insufficient registrations, the workshop will be cancelled, and you’ll get a refund of your workshop fee. We do expect this workshop to run, however.
About your tutor
Scottish stained glass artist Angela Steel initially trained as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art (BA Hons). It was there that she first discovered the luminous possibilities of glass – a medium that would later become central to her artistic practice. Angela returned to glass in 2001, and has since built a diverse body of work that spans contemporary stained glass for public and private commissions, as well as restoration and conservation projects.
In 2022, Angela deepened her expertise through postgraduate study in a Masters of Stained Glass Conservation & Heritage Management at the University of York, combining hands-on craftsmanship with historical and technical research. That same year, her work was selected for exhibition at the British Glass Biennale.
Angela has presented solo shows of autonomous glass panels at the Compass Gallery and The Arches in Glasgow, and taken part in numerous group exhibitions. Her stained glass panels – designed to be displayed like illuminated paintings – reflect a dialogue between light, colour and storytelling, which bridges fine art and traditional craft.

Nestled in Falkirk in the heart of Scotland, Studio 164 is the home of Mosaic & Glass, an international magazine and organiser of mosaic and glass events and learning opportunities.
Our studio hosts community classes, workshops, exhibitions, meet-ups, pop-ups, and more, providing a hub for creativity and connection in the Falkirk area. It’s also available to hire – perfect for evening, half-day, one-day or multi-day/week workshops, events, or collaborations.
It was founded by Rhona Duffy, editor of Mosaic & Glass magazine and a local mosaic artist who loves to share her passions and skills with others. She has already been teaching mosaic for several years and she’s very excited to be now bringing a programme of mosaic and glass events to Central Scotland in Studio 164, including community classes, parent and child classes, one/multi-day workshops, meet-ups and exhibitions, as well as hosting experts in mosaic and glass from across the world for masterclasses and talks.
Rhona has created a welcoming space that she wants to share with other local people too, to enable more teaching, learning, connection, creativity, and sharing. So whether you’re looking to hold your own event, or you’re interested in trying something new, we invite you to be part of our growing creative community. We’re looking forward to seeing how the space develops and evolves!
