What you'll do
Embark on a journey into the captivating world of iconography through our guided introductory process. You will delve into the roots of this ancient art form from the delicate technique of egg tempera to helpful painting skills!
This weekend painting workshop is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the depth of iconography, exploring both its spirituality and intricate technical aspects. Join us for a weekend of growth discovering the tradition, spirituality and techniques that are essential to icon paintings.
You will have the chance to learn how to create egg yolk binding medium and mix paints with dry pigments, all while using MDF panels layered with gesso to produce your stunning artwork. Depending on your experience and needs, your talented teacher will create a plan for what you can achieve in your weekend course.
You will learn the basic principles of the following techniques:
- Preparation of egg yolk binding medium.
- The stages of creating smooth skin tones and detail in iconography.
- Russian method of brushwork and thin layering to achieve a smooth surface.
- Dry brushwork; using dry on dry method.
- Building shapes with lights instead of shadows.
Please note: the length and timings of each course day differs. Saturdays run from 10:30am-5pm, whilst Sundays run from 12:10pm-4pm.
Knowledge required
All are welcome and no experience is required.

All materials and equipment needed to paint an icon on an MDF panel to take home.
