Experience the world of icon painting in this five-week art course for beginners. Appreciate the beauty of this ancient craft and learn new painting skills.
Guiding you through this adventure through historical art is a skilled and supportive teacher. Plus, on hand is a collective of icon painters who are passionate and ready to exchange ideas with fellow art lovers!
Discover the community of artists and crafters here in the city as you play with technique and colour and learn something new. There will be a break for lunch during each painting class, giving you time to connect with your group.
At the Edinburgh School Of Icon Painting, we embrace the dynamic and evolving nature of tradition. So you will learn the classical techniques, but you are welcome to bring along unique ideas and contemporary approaches to encourage experimentation.
You will learn the basics of the technique and traditional styles of icon painting. Which include:
- Composition skills used in icon painting.
- The Byzantine and Russian styles of the art form.
- How to prepare egg yolk binding medium.
- Learning how to make paints from dry pigments.
- How to work with thin layers.
- Egg tempera brushwork.
- Dry brushwork.
