Beginners Upcycling Embroidery Workshop - Learn Couching

Learn embroidery in this beginner-friendly London experience.

1.5 hours Class size 5 to 12     label £40

Discover the creative possibilities of couching stitching in this London embroidery workshop. Using upcycled fabric and yarn, you'll transform waste into a beautiful textile sampler, exploring up to seven different couching stitches.

Led by a friendly, local teacher, Ashley Jess Knight, this class offers a therapeutic and relaxing atmosphere in her weaving studio. Couching is a hand embroidery technique that involves trapping a 3D material onto fabric and is perfect for complete beginners and those looking to learn a new decorative embroidery stitch.

You'll start with the basics, then try out other manipulations of these embroidery stitches at your own pace. You can even personalise your textile art by digging through Ashley's trove of upcycled beads and embellishments to add to the piece, reflecting your unique style.

This London workshop is perfect for crafty hen parties, team-building, or a special Valentine's Day treat. Ashely can also bring the fun to you across London and the UK (extra travel costs apply).

Come along for an engaging, hands-on experience that combines creativity, skill-building, and the joy of upcycling. Your textile art adventure awaits!

Ashley Jess Knight

Ashley is an award winning upcycler, weaver and textile designer based in South East London whose work focuses on colour, texture, joy and sustainability!

Ashley started her textile business in 2021 after winning the Cockpit Arts x Clothworkers award which allowed her to establish her London studio where she creates handwoven samples and designs alongside her namesake fashion brand where she creates upcycled jackets and accessories using her own handwoven fabrics woven from discarded materials such as wedding dresses, denim and deadstock materials.

Ashleys strong passion in keeping both the materials and memory from going into landfill has led her to running upcycling workshops allowing participants to create beautiful upcycled artworks, learn more about upcycling and sustainable fashion and learn useful upcycling skills that can be used after the workshop.

Ashley has run workshops and demos for organisations such as; The British Textile Biennial, New Designers, London Borough of Culture, Cockpit Arts, Arts for Dementia and Art fund-funded projects.

Ashley's workshops focus on upcycling skills focusing on the embroidery technique of couching, allowing participants to upcycle weaving waste into textured and 3D art pieces which can be simple technical swatches or more complex themed art pieces.
