Course Overview:

This FACE-TO-FACE workshop will cover the history of the traditional İznik ceramic/çini patterns from renowned artist Nagihan Seymour.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Iznik tile patterns with our exciting workshop! Inspired by the exquisite tile pattern showcased in the British Museum, students will have the unique opportunity to paint and recreate this stunning design.

İznik pottery is named after the town of İznik in western Anatolia where it was founded. From the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century, these decorated ceramics were one of the most important decorative materials embellishing Ottoman structures ranging from palaces to mosques. During this workshop, participants will first be introduced to all the materials and their uses. After becoming acquainted with the materials, you will be shown painting techniques in the Iznik style using traditional Iznik ceramic paints from Turkey.

Assessment / Outcome:

Participants will receive feedback throughout the workshop and paint their own tile (10×10 cm) accordingly. Following the class, the instructor will glaze and fire the finished works in a kiln. The attendees will be able to collect their work from the Yunus Emre Institute London once they are ready.

Methods of Teaching:

The course will be taught according to the traditional training and the educational model used in Istanbul, which has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years.

Required Equipment & Materials:

All materials will be provided by the Institute.

Disclaimer:

The course is taught in English, but some terminology used may be in Turkish. We recommend you avoid wearing loose clothing, especially large cuffs and neckties.

IMPORTANT! Please understand, whilst every care is taken in firing your work, ceramics can be subject to cracking during firing.
