Ready to get your hands dirty and create your very own mug? Whether you're a complete beginner looking for a fun new hobby, or just curious about clay, London is packed with fantastic classes just for you! From the creative hubs of Hackney and Bethnal Green to the brilliant studios in Peckham, Brixton, and Camden, there are workshops dotted all across the city. So, if you've been searching for "mug making classes near me," your hunt is officially over!
London is brimming with incredible artistic talent, where passionate local potters are excited to share their skills with you. They’ll guide you through the whole process of making a mug, making it fun and easy to understand. From simple hand-building to the magic of the potter's wheel, you're sure to find a class that suits your style, no matter your starting level.
The best part? These classes are perfect for any schedule. Whether you're looking for a one-off taster session for a special occasion or just a relaxing activity to enjoy by yourself, you can easily escape into a world of creative fun. You don't need any experience or to bring any supplies – just wear some comfy clothes you don't mind getting a bit messy, and let your creativity flow! Your friendly teacher will guide you every step of the way, making sure you learn the basics while having a brilliant time creating something totally unique.

This is the big question! When you make your own mug, you generally have two fantastic options. The hand-building path is the perfect place to start for beginners. You'll use simple, fun techniques like slab building (using flat pieces of clay), pinching or coiling to build your mug from scratch. It's a wonderfully relaxing method and the most reliable way to create a beautifully personal and unique mug in just one session.
The potter's wheel path is the iconic Ghost experience! There's something magical about feeling the clay spin and take shape under your hands. It's a bit more challenging to master, especially in a short taster session, but our friendly teachers are there to help you learn the basics of 'throwing'. You'll have a brilliant time, and while your first creation might be a little wonky (which is all part of the charm!), you might just make a lovely cup or bowl.

Stepping into a pottery studio for the first time is a lovely experience. You'll be greeted by your teacher, who will be a talented local potter. You don't need to bring anything or have any experience at all—these classes are designed for absolute beginners.
Your teacher will explain everything, show you the techniques, and be there to help you as you create your mug. You'll get all the clay and tools you need. The focus is on having a relaxing, fun time and enjoying the feeling of making something with your own hands.

It's normal to have questions before you try something new. Here are the answers to some of the most common ones.
How much does a mug making class cost?
You'll be happy to know that trying a mug-making taster session in London is wonderfully affordable. Prices can vary depending on the studio, the length of the class, and what's included. Typically, you can expect a class to be anywhere from £30 to £70 per person.
What should I wear?
This is the best part: wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little bit messy! Clay washes out, but it's best to wear old clothes. We also recommend tying long hair back and taking off any rings or jewellery, as they can get in the way or covered in clay. Short sleeves, or ones you can roll up, are a good idea, too.
When do I get to take my mug home?
This is the most important thing to know! You won't be able to take your mug home on the same day. Your creation needs to go on a little journey first:
Drying: It must dry out completely, which can take a week or more.
First Firing: It's then fired in a special, very hot oven called a kiln.
Glazing: The studio technicians will dip it in your chosen glaze colour.
Second Firing: It goes back into the kiln for a final firing, which can take over 26 hours (including cooling!).
This whole professional process is what turns your clay into a real, waterproof ceramic piece. It usually takes 3 to 5 weeks before your mug is finished and ready for you to collect.
Will my handmade mug be food-safe?
Absolutely. All our partner studios use professional-grade, food-safe glazes. The high-temperature firing process makes the mug waterproof and perfectly safe to drink from. Many are even robust enough for the dishwasher.

A mug-making class isn't just a class – it's a fantastic experience, perfect for any occasion. Looking for a way to relax? Pottery is a wonderfully calm and meditative activity, perfect for easing stress and anxiety.
It's also a brilliant way to get together with friends, family, or colleagues. Here are just a few ideas:
Team building: Ditch the trust falls! A pottery class is a brilliant way for your team to relax, bond, and have fun together in a creative setting.
Hen parties and birthdays: Get the group together for a fun, social activity. Many studios are 'BYOB' (Bring Your Own Bottle), so you can sip and sculpt!
Date nights: Stuck for a date idea? A BYOB pottery class is a fun, hands-on way to spend time together.
Creative gifts: Want to give a brilliant present? A pottery gift voucher is the perfect choice, letting your loved one pick their own creative experience.
