Looking for a fun way to express yourself and create something useful? Bookbinder Cass Barron and printmaker Lou Davis - have teamed up to bring you a colourful and creative celebration of colour, texture, mark-making and bookbinding.
The day begins with a gel printing session. Lou will show you how to make your own vege-gel printing plate, and share lots of ideas on how to create homemade stencils, and use found objects, to create unusual and stunning shapes and textures onto paper. She will share tips on how to get the most out of a limited colour palette, and guidance on colour-mixing and composition.
Once you have created a series of prints onto different papers, envelopes and pre-loved materials such as old maps and book pages, Cass will show you how to transform these into a colourful A5 Journal with hard-cover, exposed spine and decorative cross stitch binding.
By the end of the workshop you’ll have a wide range of mark-making techniques under your belt that can be applied to everything from bookbinding and card making, to printing your own wrapping paper. You’ll also have started selecting prints to feature in your book, and begun making your cover and inside pages ready to stitch together at home.
As there is a bit of drying time required, and we don't want to rush your creativity, following the workshop, you will be given access to a series of how-to videos showing you how to compile, stitch and add finishing touches to your book at home. This gives the added bonus of being able to revisit these videos should you want to make more books and prints in the future.
These books make great personal journals and unique gifts for birthdays, Christmas and other celebrations - it's been great to see previous participants go on to make multiple books and prints with the skills learnt on this course.
All materials will be provided along with tea and coffee to fuel your creativity, and you have the option to bring your own lunch, or pop out to one of the many nearby café, shops and delis.
There is the option to buy a bookbinding toolkit, printing paints and paint roller if you would like to take these home at the end of the workshop.
Please note:
- It is unlikely that you will finish your book in the workshop but you will be equipped with everything you need to complete your journal at home.
- Our workshop space is on the first-floor of a Georgian mews building and unfortunately we do not have lift access. The workshop space is in our home which is not nut free. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies before booking.
