What equipment do I need for making jewellery?
One of the best things about diving into one of our jewellery making courses in London is that you don’t need to worry about bringing a massive toolbox! For most of our popular workshops, like silver ring forging or beadwork, all the specialist equipment and materials are provided for you. You'll be working with high-quality gear, such as jeweller's pliers, mini torches for soldering (yes, fire!), hammers for stamping and texturing, and even tiny anvils – all safely supplied by your expert teacher. This means you can show up, relax, and focus entirely on the fun part: shaping your metal and designing your masterpiece! It’s completely fuss-free and ensures you get hands-on with the right tools from the very start.
However, if you're looking to continue your new hobby at home, starting your own kit for making jewellery is easier than you think!
-
Round-nose pliers: Essential for creating loops, curves, and coils in your wire.
- Chain-nose pliers: Used for gripping, bending, and straightening wire, and for opening/closing jump rings.
-
Wire cutters: Needed for making clean, precise cuts in soft jewellery wire.
-
Jewellery wire: Start with soft, flexible wire like 20 or 24 gauge craft wire for practice.
-
Jump rings: Small metal rings used to connect components like clasps and pendants (you'll need various sizes).
-
Clasps: Essential finishing pieces, such as lobster clasps or toggle clasps, to secure your necklaces and bracelets.
-
Head pins and eye pins: Used to create simple dangles or links from beads.
-
Beads / findings: Your decorative elements! Grab a fun assortment of glass, stone, or plastic beads to experiment with.
-
Beading mat or towel: A soft, textured surface to stop your tiny beads from rolling away while you work.
-
Ruler or measuring tape: For ensuring your necklaces and bracelets are the perfect length!
Your talented instructor at your jewellery making workshop will always share insider tips and resource lists during the class, showing you where to find affordable starter kits so you can keep the creativity flowing long after the session is over!
