Hand-Building Pottery Experience

This is a 2-hour self-led hand-building with clay session where you are free to make what you wish using our pottery tools. These sessions are perfect for people who have prior experience of working with clay (you don’t need a lot) or have attended our Introduction to Hand-Building Pottery Class or one of our other instructor-led pottery workshops and have an idea of what you want to make.

You will receive 500g of clay but can purchase additional clay if you want to build a bigger piece (£5 per 250g). After basic instruction, you’ll be left to get on with your project using techniques such as coiling, pinching, rolling, slip and scoring, and stamping into the clay.

Depending on the piece you make, it may also be possible to paint your piece during the same session. If not, you can book in a week or so later once your piece has dried sufficiently, or you can choose for us to just clear glaze it. If you do come back to paint, it will incur a £4.50 studio fee per painting session.

Items need to be left with us to dry before we will glaze and fire them and can take 3-4 weeks before they’re ready to collect. If coming back to paint, they will be ready around 2 weeks after painting.

While these sessions run in term time and are aimed at adults, home-educated children are welcome to attend our daytime sessions. Please note, however, this class is not suitable for children under 5, and children under the age of 14 will need to be accompanied by an adult to supervise and provide assistance where needed.

Please be advised that due to the nature of clay, there are problems that can arise during the making, drying, and firing process of pottery that may affect your piece. Depending on what it is, they can't always be rectified. We advise you to first attend our Introduction to Hand Building workshop where you will learn the basics, and we go over the pitfalls and how to prevent them from happening. If booking others onto this session, please make them aware of this before you book.

  A pottery piece made by you!
  We provide the clay and lots of tools for you to use. However, feel free to bring any of your own stamps, lace, pasta, dried flowers, etc., to imprint into your clay.
