Beginners Hand Building Ceramics Course - 4 Weeks

Discover the art of making pottery by hand!

4 x 5 hours Class size 1 to 6     label £215

Unwind with the rewarding craft of making ceramics over a series of four pottery classes designed specifically for beginners. Guiding you on your creative journey is talented ceramicist, Paula!

You'll be welcomed into the pottery studio in Fenstanton, Cambridgeshire every Saturday for this four-week course to learn the fundamentals of working with clay including the three primary hand-building techniques (pinch pots, slab building, and coiling). You will also be introduced to decorative finishes that you can add to surfaces like oxides and underglazes.

By the end of the course, you'll have at least four beautifully crafted ceramic pieces to take home and share with loved ones— each showcasing a different technique, as well as one of your own designs. So you have plenty to enjoy yourself plus some to share with friends and family as unique gifts!

Paula is a patient and supportive instructor who loves to see her students' creativity flourish. Once you've mastered the basics and feel confident in your skills, Paula will encourage you to explore your own unique artistic vision and provide personalized guidance to help bring your ideas to life.

Classes will take place over four Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm, or ten Thursday morning sessions 10am - 12pm.

All materials, firings, and access to the studio's tools and equipment are included. All you need to bring is some old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Let Paula help you discover your inner potter and create beautiful, handmade ceramics that will be treasured for years to come.

I passionately believe that everyone has the ability to be creative and love teaching because of this. I get a kick out of seeing students’ faces light up when they see a piece they made fresh from the kiln that they love, especially when they weren’t expecting it to work. I have heard too many people say, “I envy you. I’m just not creative.” including some students when they first arrive. Being creative doesn’t mean being good at art and craft. It’s soooo much broader than that (but I won’t go into that here!).

For myself I love trying new techniques and pushing clay to its limits. I often get asked, “how did you make that?” even by fellow ceramicists. The infinite possibilities of clay as a medium appeals to my need to constantly evolve my work and my love of learning and challenging myself. Teaching adds another layer to that.
