Come get your hands creatively dirty! With a few clever tricks up our festive sleeves, anyone can craft a wreath that welcomes the season in style. After all, 'tis the season for learning joyful new skills.

Do your research

The humble Christmas wreath has had a bit of a makeover in recent years. What was once simply made from evergreen foliage, holly and berries has been transformed and is now crafted from, well, whatever you like. From minimalist Scandi-style festive wreaths made entirely from eucalyptus to the fanciest creations finished with baubles and lights, anything goes!

If you’ve never crafted any decorations from scratch before, you might be feeling overwhelmed, especially as there are so many Christmas wreath ideas around. The best thing to do is start by jotting down some initial thoughts and scour blogs, magazines and of course, Instagram for inspiration, then head to Pinterest and create a board to keep track of everything. Read up on different plants and foliage, think about how long you’d like to spend on your handmade Christmas wreath, and finally look at the costs involved. We think spending a little time with your feet up and a fabulous festive tipple to hand is a great way to kick off your Christmas crafting adventure!

Whether you choose to craft alone, or meet up with other festive fans and whip up a wonderful wreath at one of our Christmas wreath workshops, having a good plan in place will make sure you end up with the decoration of dreams rather than a nightmare before Christmas!A woman is sitting at a table learning how to make a Christmas wreath

Think carefully about your Christmas wreath design

You might be itching to get stuck in with the greenery, but we think you should step away from the secateurs and put down the pine cones – because our second tip is to plan the overall design in advance. Honestly, you’ll thank us later!

Start by deciding where you want your DIY Christmas wreath to go; is it going to be proudly displayed on your front door, or are you planning on popping it above the fireplace for a cosy festive finishing touch? An indoor version will have to cope with central heating, while an outdoor Christmas wreath will need to be sturdier and made to withstand different weather conditions – and we all know that here in the UK, we can easily experience four seasons in one day!

If you are planning on adorning your front door with a wonderful DIY Christmas wreath this festive season, it’s important you take into consideration the size and style of your home. Do you live in a traditional stone cottage with tiny windows, or is the front of your house a modern Scandi style with plenty of clean lines and glass? What colours are you leaning towards, and do you want to stick to simple greenery or add interest with dried flowers? Making sure your handmade Christmas wreath fits in perfectly with the style of your home will really help to give those festive guests a warm welcome this winter!

Pick your Christmas wreath plants carefully

When it comes to DIY christmas wreaths, choosing the right plants and foliage can help take your creation from mediocre to magnificent, and will leave your house looking truly tree-mendous throughout the festive season!

Have you opted for a fresh or dried Christmas wreath? Making your own Christmas wreath from flowers and foliage that have been pre-dried means that you won’t have to worry about curling leaves or fading blooms, and your creation will look as good on twelfth night as it did on Christmas Eve! The other bonus is that a dried festive wreath will stand the test of time; dried flowers and foliage last between one and three years – so it’ll be able to visit your home again next year. Just like Santa!

If you decide on a fresh DIY Christmas wreath, opt for plants and foliage which dry out nicely and still look beautiful over time – drooping stems and limp leaves aren’t the best way to wish your visitors a merry Christmas! Evergreens such as holly, ivy and cedar are great choices, and can be embellished with dried fruits, berries and pinecones.

Still feeling daunted when it comes to picking plants and finding foliage? Our Christmas wreath classes provide all the equipment and materials you need, so simply choose between fresh and dried, and then sign yourself up! The best thing is that you’ll end up with plenty of floristry knowledge under your belt, so not only will you head home with a fabulous festive decoration, you’ll also know how to craft more in the future. Don’t be afraid to embellish your festive wreath

The finishing touches are always one of the most fun parts of any craft project, and DIY Christmas wreaths are no different. Think you’re limited to a single tartan bow? Think again! Roll up those sleeves, grab the glue gun and get stuck in!

If your handmade Christmas wreath has a natural vibe, stick with that and add in elements such as pine cones, dried fruit, cinnamon sticks and dried flowers. Simple wooden shapes such as small stars, and even feathers add a little interest while sticking to the nature theme.

Alternatively, add interest with textiles; think luxe velvet ribbon in vibrant jewel tones, interesting braids, delicate lace and tulle or even pompoms. If you’re a maximalist who thinks ‘more is more’, really get stuck in by topping your festive wreath off with a short string of fairy lights or some delicate battery-powered candles – nobody will miss your house in the dark, and it’ll be a welcoming sight during dull, grey winter days! A group of people are making festive wreaths with greenery
