Sashiko Workshop for Beginners

Learn a unique Japanese craft at this introduction to Sashiko workshop in Buckingham

2 hours Class size 4 to 10     label £35

On the search for unique things to do in Buckingham? Learn how to stitch Sashiko squares at this relaxing workshop with The Nimble Thimble.

A traditional method of sewing originating in Japan from the 17th century, Sashiko, meaning ‘little stabs’, uses a running stitch to form a variety of geometric patterns. It was originally a form of darning to mend clothing and strengthen weaker areas of the fabric. Today, Sashiko is still a sustainable method of mending although is now used more for decorative embroidery.

Don't worry if you're new to Sashiko stitching - this workshop is perfect for beginners. Your teacher, Suzanne from Hooks, Needles & Threads, will guide you step-by-step, showing you how to make the stitches, transfer patterns onto fabric and make a coaster and a sampler.

By the end of the workshop, you'll not only have honed your stitching skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the art of Sashiko. We're positive you'll love this calming and meditative experience!

The Nimble Thimble was started in 2009 by two friends Val Sandford and Jane Templeman who loved to craft but couldn’t find anywhere local.

From this small beginning The Nimble Thimble was born and proved to be a huge success. So much so that it quickly out grew its premises in Bridge Street and moved to a larger space in Well Street, where it can still be found today.

In 2020 Jane Hawkins took over and, together with Sara Blackwell and Kate Lowe, they aim to make The Nimble Thimble the one stop destination.

2021 saw a facelift and reorganisation of the shop layout. This created more space for new yarn and crafts as well as dressmaking fabrics for the first time.
