Dressmaking Workshop for Beginners

Transform fabric into fashion at this hands-on dressmaking class in Buckingham

4 hours Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 4 to 10 label £55

Learn how to sew and design your clothing at this introduction to dressmaking workshop in Buckinghamshire. This hands-on workshop is designed for those new to dressmaking or are looking for a refresher on this fun and practical hobby.

Your passionate teacher Jane will take you through cutting out your dressmaking patterns and laying them out on the fabric correctly. Learn how to avoid common mistakes and how to decipher instructions. Together you will then construct the garment.

The Nimble Thimble stocks a wide range of 100% cotton fabric – perfect for a new spring/summer dress or you can purchase fabric from elsewhere (please no stretch or jersey fabrics). When choosing your pattern, look for one marked “Beginner” or “Easy”. Alternatively, we can provide you with a suggested list of patterns.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to design and sew your clothing. Take home a newly created garment or work in progress that's uniquely yours, showcasing your newfound dressmaking skills.

Late policy: If you arrive more than 20 minutes late you will not be able to take part in the class and you will not be able to move to another class or receive a refund. Classes start promptly.

Your teacher

The Nimble Thimble was started in 2009 by two friends Val Sandford and Jane Templeman who loved to craft but couldn’t find anywhere local.

From this small beginning The Nimble Thimble was born and proved to be a huge success. So much so that it quickly out grew its premises in Bridge Street and moved to a larger space in Well Street, where it can still be found today.

In 2020 Jane Hawkins took over and, together with Sara Blackwell and Kate Lowe, they aim to make The Nimble Thimble the one stop destination.

2021 saw a facelift and reorganisation of the shop layout. This created more space for new yarn and crafts as well as dressmaking fabrics for the first time.
