Watchmaking Taster Day Workshop

Dip your toes into the fascinating world of horology and become a watchmaker for the day.

6 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests

  £125 - £139 (£139 per guest when you book for 1 guest, £125/guest for 2+ guests)

Discover first-hand what it takes to be a professional watchmaker and dive into the micro-mechanical world of watchmaking.
Throughout the class, you will gain invaluable knowledge of the inner workings of a watch movement and begin to master the delicate skill of using watchmaker’s tools. Gain an understanding of the craftsmanship involved in creating a watch as you embark on an extraordinary journey guided by an experienced professional watchmaker.
With years of experience as watchmakers and teaching students watchmaking, one of our team will lead you through the process of disassembling a watch movement and then reassembling it. Detailed PowerPoint presentations, videos and hands-on demonstrations will aid your learning and understanding how a watch works.
You will be working on an ST36 watch movement, a type of movement that is used in modern-day wristwatches and used in watchmaking training centres throughout the world.
This is a very big watch movement, which helps when using tweezers, fine screwdrivers, and a loupe, which magnifies the work, especially for those using these tools for the first time. There are also high-powered trinocular stereo microscopes on each workbench to help with seeing and understanding what you will be working on.
You will disassemble the ST36 movement and reassemble it again, until it is fully working and ticking away.
You will also lubricate the movement using a fine tipped watchmaker's oiler,  which tests your steady hand, oiling what is in effect the size of a head of a pin!
You'll end the class by regulating (timing) the movement to within a few seconds per day using a timegrapher and if you have your own watch, see how that is keeping time using the same equipment.
No need to worry if you're new to watchmaking! This workshop is designed to alleviate any fears and cater to beginners. You'll be working with state-of-the-art equipment and height-adjustable workbenches, and one of our watchmakers will be there every step of the way to offer guidance, making the experience enjoyable and enriching.
At the end of the workshop, you'll leave with newfound knowledge and a sense of accomplishment. This unique experience offers a transformative journey into the world of horology, allowing you to fuel your passion for watches and gain hands-on experience of how they work.
Whether you're a complete novice, an enthusiast, or have always wanted to learn how to make your own watch, this workshop is the perfect activity to nurture your curiosity and expand your horizons.
You will also have cloud storage access to the 175 pages PowerPoint presentation that aided the watchmaking taster day, including two extra lessons to help understand more in depth the keyless and motion work, as well as a comprehensive watchmaking tools list to help navigate the pitfalls of buying watchmaking tools and equipment.
You'll have the opportunity to buy a brand new ST36 watch movement to take home for an extra £45, payable at the end of the lesson, if you choose.
With the movement and presentations you will be able to perform the same disassembly and assembly as you did in the taster day with some basic tools.
This is an amazing opportunity to experience what a watchmaker does every day in a small class of up to eight students.

  • 5/5 from Matt, attended Jun 2026: I recently attended Jon’s watchmaking taster course, and it was an absolutely phenomenal experience from start to finish. As someone with an engineering background, I wanted a hands-on experience that went beyond the surface level, and this course delivered exactly that. Over the course of the day (10am to 4pm), we completely stripped down and rebuilt a Seagull ST36 pocket watch movement. Jon is a fantastic teacher and an incredibly nice guy. He brings a decade of deep servicing and teaching experience to the bench, explaining the micro-mechanics clearly and patiently. He noted that it takes about two years to truly get comfortable with tweezers, and sitting at the bench, you immediately appreciate that level of skill. The bench setup itself was brilliant, featuring professional sit-stand desks, excellent ergonomics, high-quality loupes, and top-tier tools. The atmosphere in the workshop was focused yet highly supportive and welcoming. I managed to get the movement back together and running without dropping a single part or launching a spring across the room! Putting the watch onto the timegrapher at the end to see the mechanical feedback was a brilliant touch. If you want to move past watching videos online and actually get your hands into the gears under expert guidance, this course is worth every single penny of the £125. I absolutely loved it, want to do more, and highly recommend Jon to anyone interested in the craft
  • 5/5 from Francois Meyer, attended Jun 2026: It's always been a far fetched dream to go into watch making or watch repairs. But Jon has made this a reality. A reality that has far surpassed my expectations. This class is fantastic for anyone who has never seen more than just the face and back of a watch. Yet, you take your own watch apart and put it back together and then test and refine your work. This class was everything and more than I expected. Would highly recommend it to any new/novice watch enthusiasts.
  • 5/5 from Jennifer Murphy, attended Jun 2026: Really enjoyed it. Absolutely fantastic and interesting teacher, super knowledgeable and would recommend to anyone

Jon was always interested to know how things worked and became a mechanical engineer in his early life.
When he opened up a watch for the first time, he was amazed at how all those tiny parts could fit into such a small space and work with such simplicity and precision. That’s where his passion for watchmaking began.
Jon trained for two years at Epping Forest Horology Centre (EFHC) and spent many hours in his home workshop furthering his passion, knowledge and experience with more esoteric and complicated watches. Six years ago, he wrote and taught a set of evening courses and weekend taster days for students at EFHC.
Four years ago, he realised the need to teach the dying art of watchmaking in London, so he set up his own well equipped workshop and created London Watchmaking School where he and other professional watchmakers teach watchmaking taster days and evening courses to enable those interested in the world of horology to dip their toes in and experience what a watchmaker does every day.
At the London Watchmaking School weekly evening courses are also taught to complete beginners, as well as to the more seasoned horologists and professionals. Jon has collaborated with and taught watchmakers from Christopher Ward Watches, Mr. Jones Watches and Camden Watch Company and watch service centres across London, as well as students who want to learn how to service their own watches. He loves being able to share his knowledge and passion for watchmaking with others.
Jon never tires of opening up a watch and witnessing their stories and history, then returning them to life. He believes that watches are more than just wheels, cogs and springs, they need love and attention to be able to breathe life back into them.
Either Jon, Rob or Kyle will be hosting the taster day. All of these professional watchmakers are equally passionate about what they teach.
Rob (FBHI) brings his own expertise and love for watchmaking, which he is excited to share with you.
Kyle is one of the new kids on the block of young wave of watchmakers fresh back from two years of watchmaker training in Geneva, Switzerland and now works for a high end watch company.
He has recently joined the team and is passionate to share his knowledge with you during the taster day.
Watchmaking truly is love made visible!
